Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, used outstanding pitching to drop the Winston-Salem Dash Monday, 2-0, in the first of three game series at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Wilmer Font, in his second start since Tommy John Surgery in 2010, fired three shutout innings, allowing two hits and walking only one. He was backed up by five more shutout frames from Chad Bell and a hitless ninth from Randy Henry. Bell took the win, allowing only three hits. Henry earned his second save.

On offense the Pelicans scored one run in each the fourth and fifth innings. With one out in the fourth, Tomas Telis and Christian Villanueva singled back-to-back and then executed a double steal. The next batter, Vinny DiFazio, rolled over to second to drive Telis in for a 1-0 advantage.

In the fifth inning Santiago Chirino sent a solo blast over the Budweiser Thirst Inning Deck in left for his first homerun of the season. The Pelicans went ahead 2-0.

Winston-Salem turned in a masterful pitching performance from starter Matt Heidenreich, but in defeat. The righty fired the first complete game in the Carolina League this season, allowing two runs on six hits in eight innings.
