Salem, VA - The Hillcats were shut out for the first time this season tonight at LewisGale Field. The Red Sox defeated Lynchburg 5-0. Only two of the five Salem runs were earned as each of the three Hillcat errors led to their own unearned run. The Hillcats only managed four hits in the game, their lowest total of the year.
The Red Sox struck first with an run in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner at third base and two outs, first baseman Travis Shaw hit a ground ball to shortstop Nick Ahmed. The ball skipped off the heal of Ahmed's glove and into left-center field. It was 1-0 Salem after the first.
Designated hitter Carson Blair singled for the Red Sox in the second inning. An infield single moved Blair to third base, who then scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of left fielder Felix Sanchez. The run was the first earned run allowed by Hillcats' starter Cody Martin this season, as he worked his eighth inning of the year.
Martin (2-1) would end up finishing five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits. He struck out a career-high seven batters.
Salem scored two more unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings. LHP Chasen Shreve gave up a two-out single to Coyle in the seventh. LHP Blaine Sims pitched the eighth. His first batter singled to left field. Ahmed received the throw in for the outfield and relayed to first to attempt a back pick. His throw sailed into the first base dugout. The two-base error moved the runner to third base with nobody out. Sims induced a ground ball to third, getting an out and holding the runner at third base. The next batter, third baseman James Kang, hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring the fifth an final run. Sims struck out the following batter to end the inning and the run would be unearned.
RHP Keith Couch (2-1) earned the win with six innings of relief. He allowed no runs on four hits, and struck out seven.
