Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Youth isn't a problem for Pelicans pitcher Cody Buckel in 2012. The fourth youngest player on a Carolina League roster, Buckel was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the first week of the season. The announcement was made by league commissioner John Hopkins Monday.

Buckel, 19, from Simi Valley, CA, went 1-0 in his first two starts, throwing 10 shutout innings while striking out 16. He did not walk a batter in his second appearance, a six inning outing. At the time of his second start, Buckel's strikeout total was good for seventh in all of Minor League Baseball and first in both the Carolina League and the Texas Rangers organization.

Buckel is only the 11th teenager in Myrtle Beach Pelicans history. Seven of the previous ten have gone on to Major League careers. The last teens to don Pelicans Blue were Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino in 2010.

Lynchburg's Evan Gattis was named Player of the Week after hitting three homeruns and driving in 14 in nine games.

Fans have their chance to get a Cody Buckel poster Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, as part of the Pelicans Team Tuesday poster series. The giveaway is brought to you by ESPN 100.3 the Team and Sheriar Press.

The Pelicans return home tonight, April 16th, at 7:05 against the Winston-Salem Dash. Great seats are still available by calling 843-918-6000, or by visiting MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn.
