Flames top west division champs

April 1, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release

The Flames earned two critical playoff points in a 3-1 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night at the i wireless Center. Cam Cunning, Carsen Germyn and Kris Chucko scored for Quad City in the win. Leland Irving established a new franchise record for goaltender wins with the victory, his 21st of the season.

The Flames took a 1-0 lead on the first period's only goal. Cam Cunning scored on the rebound after doggedly following an Anders Eriksson point shot that was knocked away by Milwaukee's Mark Dekanich. After several swats at the biscuit, Cunning recovered the bouncing puck and beat Dekanich for his sixth goal of the year and his third tally in the last four games.

In the second period, the Flames extended their lead when Carsen Germyn powered home a slot shot during a Quad City power play. David Van der Gulik and Anders Eriksson earned assists on the goal as the Flames held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

The Admirals made the third period interesting when they pulled to within a single goal of the Flames. Ian MacKenzie recorded the tally during a delayed penalty to decrease the margin to 2-1. The Flames bottled up the Admirals for the remainder of the period before Kris Chucko scored into an empty net with one minute left to insure the win.

While the Flames were battling Milwaukee, Rockford earned a 5-2 win in Lake Erie. The Hogs currently hold the final playoff spot in the West Division. Their magic number (a combination of Rockford points earned plus points missed by Quad City) to clinch a spot ahead of the Flames has shrunk to five with five games remaining for both squads.

The Flames are back on home ice on Friday to face Chicago. Game time is 7:05 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. Quad City Firefighters will be facing off with Chicago Firefighters. Ticket packages that include tickets to the firefighter game, a lower bowl ticket to the Flames game, a hot dog and a box of popcorn are available for just $20.00. A package that includes a child's ticket is available for $17.00. From each package sold, $7.00 will be donated to the Bob Juarez Relief Fund. Flames season ticket holders are invited to attend the firefighters' game in exchange for a $7.00 donation to the fund. Bob Juarez is a Davenport firefighter that was paralyzed in the line of duty.
