April 1, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Mattias Karlsson has been named to the 2008-09 AHL All-Rookie Team. The AHL All-Rookie Team is selected by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league's 29 member cities.
Karlsson, 23, ranks second among all AHL rookies with 41 assists and leads all defenseman and rookies with 29 power-play assists and 36 power-play points. He set a Senators' franchise record with an assist in 12 consecutive games (1+16=17) from Feb. 6 to Mar. 1.
The blueliner needs four assists to break the Senators' franchise record for assists by a defenseman, a mark set by Filip Novak during the 2005-06 season.
A native of Stora, Sweden, Karlsson becomes the fifth Binghamton Senator named to the AHL All-Rookie Team since 2002, joining other standout rookies Brandon Bochenski (04-05), Ray Emery, Jason Spezza and Antoine Vermette (02-03).
The Binghamton defenseman will receive a custom designed crystal award prior to an upcoming game in recognition of his selection to the AHL All-Rookie Team.
Joining Karlsson on the 2008-09 AHL-All Rookie team is defenseman Yannick Weber (Hamilton), forwards Justin Abdelkader (Grand Rapids), Nathan Gerbe (Portland) and Tim Kennedy (Portland), and goaltender Nathan Lawson (Bridgeport).
Karlsson was Ottawa's fourth-round pick (135th overall) in the 2003 NHL entry draft.
2009-10 season tickets and 2009 Calder Cup playoff packages are on sale. Contact the Binghamton Senators' executive office at (607) 722-SENS for more information on these ticket packages.
