Albany Devils News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Lowell Devils could not halt the third-period rally that led to an eventual 3-2 shootout win for the Manchester Monarchs on Wednesday at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
The Devils took an important 2-1 lead 3:07 into the third on Ryan Murphy's ninth goal of the season. After Jonathan Bernier gave up a long rebound, Tyler Eckford stepped in from the near point to drive a shot that Murphy tipped into the top corner.
Kevin Westgarth evened things up for the second time in the game on a one-timer from the right circle that found the back of the net at 8:47.
Matt Halischuk had a chance to put Lowell back up top midway through the period when he was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked from behind on a breakaway. The Lowell right-winger tried to go low to the near side, but was turned away on a stick save by Bernier.
After the overtime period was unable to decide the contest, Manchester jumped out to a quick lead in the shootout on goals by Matt Moulson and Marty Murray. Pascal Rheaume pulled the Devils within one in the bottom half of round two, but Justin Azevedo answered right back for Monarchs and Bernier shut the door the rest of the way.
Frazee stopped 28 shots through the extra session for Lowell, who fell four points out of the fourth playoff berth in the Atlantic Division.
The Monarchs notched the game's first goal with tenths of a second left in the first period. While skating on his team's second power play, Matt Moulson plowed into traffic in front of the Devils' crease and swept the puck inside the far post.
Lowell tied the game, 1-1, at 9:13 of the second when Vladimir Zharkov set up camp behind the Manchester net and hit a pinching Matt Corrente with a pass to the near dot. Corrente beat Bernier with a wrist shot under the blocker for his sixth goal of the year.
The Lowell Devils host the Portland Pirates on Friday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m. Listen as Ryan Johnston brings you all of the live action on 980AM-WCAP or at ahllive.com.
