Flames top Chops in shootout

The Flames earned a dramatic 3-2 shootout victory over Iowa in their regular season home ice finale on Friday night. Gord Baldwin and Dustin Boyd supplied the regulation goals in the victory.

With the win, the Flames remain alive for a playoff spot. The team is awaiting tonight's score from Houston and Rockford. If both the Aeros and Hogs earn at least one point tonight, the Flames will be eliminated.

The Flames dominated a scoreless first period as they outshoot Iowa 14-3. J.P. Levasseur stood tall in the Iowa net as he turned aside the Flames attack. Meanwhile, Leland Irving stopped all three shots he saw for Quad City.

Quad City grabbed a 2-0 lead on early second period goals by Gord Baldwin and Dustin Boyd. Baldwin fired home a point shot with 3:28 gone in the middle frame. Boyd followed just 12 seconds later when he swatted the puck away from Iowa's Petri Kontiola and into the Chops net. Iowa responded with a shorthanded goal by Petteri Wirtanen at 7:10 of the middle period. After 40 minutes, the Flames skated off with a 2-1 lead.

MacGregor Sharp of Iowa scored the only goal of the closing frame when he neeted his first goal of the season at 13:03 of the period. His tally set up the extra session.

After a scoreless overtime, the Flames swept through the shootout with goals by David Van der Gulik, Dustin Boyd and Kris Chucko while Leland Irving stopped all three shooters he faced.

The Flames close out the regular season on Saturday night in Des Moines vs. the Iowa Chops. Face-off is set for 7:25 p.m. The Hayman's Ace Hardware Pre-Game Show kicks off the radio broadcast at 7:00 p.m. The game can also be seen at ahllive.com for just $6.00.
