Marlies clip Moose in OT

Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose dropped their sixth consecutive game to the Toronto Marlies on Friday night in a 4-3 overtime decision at the Ricoh Coliseum. Jason Jaffray, Michael Grabner and Raymond Sawada scored the trio of goals for Manitoba while Tim Stapleton handed Manitoba their first overtime loss this season with his fourth period marker.

Cory Schneider and Justin Pogge defended opposite ends of the ice as the Moose and Marlies embarked on their final regular season matchup this season.

At 6:40 Jay Rosehill charged the visiting net and Tommy Maxwell stood up for his net minder by engaging in a scrap with the Toronto forward. After a short but snippy fight, both players were handed five minute fighting majors with an additional two-minute minor for Rosehill. The Moose tested Pogge once on the man-advantage but failed to earn a goal on their opening powerplay.

At 13:33, the Marlies powerplay unit made their debut when Jason Jaffray was penalized for slashing. Despite doubling up the Moose in shots, 16-8, the home team couldn't break Schneider on their first man-advantage.

With a minute left in the first period, Joe Ryan gave the puck away at the top of the crease and Jason Jaffray's quick wrist shot sailed over Pogge for a 1-0 lead.

The opening of the second period produced instant scoring action from the Moose. Michael Grabner scored his 28th of the season when he backhanded the puck into the net, 2-0.

Toronto broke onto the scoreboard two minutes later when Ryan Hollweg hit the top shelf of Schneider's net to tighten the gap, 2-1.

At 13:10 the Moose capitalized again. Michael Grabner brought the puck out of the corner and took a shot on Pogge before Raymond Sawada smacked the rebound off the doorstep and into the net for a 3-1 tally.

With Michael Grabner in the sin bin for interference, Jeremy Williams notched his 19th PP goal of the year to place the Marlies within a goal of the leading Moose.

It only took the Marlies 1:54 into the third period to knot the game at three. Skating in from the blueline, Tim Stapleton beat Schneider underneath the cross bar to even the score.

Toronto benefited from a five-minute powerplay when Mike Keane was penalized for kneeing and was also handed a game-misconduct for the offence. Toronto's Ben Ondrus evened the odds with a holding penalty bringing play to an even four-on-four.

Tied at three goals a piece, the Moose and Marlies headed into overtime to decide the game winner.

At 2:16 Tim Stapleton wired the puck into the net to hand Manitoba their first overtime loss this season, 4-3.
