Five Spokane Prospects Named to Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Western Hockey League, in partnership with BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, Saskatchewan Hockey Association, and Hockey Manitoba as well as in association with Hockey Canada, announced earlier today the team rosters for the 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Five Spokane Chiefs prospects made the cut for the tournament set to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 28 in Calgary.

The five Spokane prospects announced include Donovan Buskey, Matt Leduc, Ty Smith, Koby Morrisseau and Cedric Chenier.

Buskey, a goaltender out of North Vancouver, B.C., will play for Team British Columbia. He was the Chiefs' third round (53rd overall) selection in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft and currently plays for the North Shore Winter Club Midget Elite A1 team. Buskey played 37 games with the NSWC Bantam A1 team last season, winning 27 including 17 shutouts.

Joining Buskey is defenseman Matt Leduc, who was Spokane's second round (31st overall) pick in this past summer's draft. Leduc, from Richmond, B.C., brings size to Team British Columbia at a towering 6-foot-4.

Ty Smith, who became just the second player ever selected by the Chiefs first overall in the bantam draft, will look to lead Team Alberta to a tournament championship. Smith, a defenseman, currently plays for the Lloydminster Bobcats Midget AAA of the AMHL. Last season, with the Delta Hockey Academy of the CSSHL, he scored nine goals and 19 assists in 16 regular season games, adding three goals and four assists in four playoff games.

Rounding out the Chiefs' presence in the elite tournament are forwards Koby Morrisseau and Cedric Chenier representing Team Manitoba.

Morrisseau, the ninth overall pick and just 12th Top 10 pick in Chiefs' franchise history (including Smith), is a skilled power forward who currently plays for the Parkland Rangers Midget AAA team in Manitoba. Last year, the Grandview, Man. native competed with Parkland Rangers Bantam AAA team, Morrisseau scored 39 goals and 22 assists.

Chenier is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound center out of Winnipeg. The Chiefs made a trade during the bantam draft to acquire an extra ninth round pick (185th overall) and selected Chenier following a season in which he potted 23 goals and added 36 assists with the Winnipeg Monarchs Bantam AAA team. Chenier currently plays with the Winnipeg Monarchs Midget team.

The U16 Challenge Cup will feature the highest rated players in the Under-16 age category representing the four western provinces of Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Full team rosters, results and ticket information, visit www.whl.ca/u16.
