Americans Prevail Over Thunderbirds in Overtime

Kennewick, WA- The Tri-City Americans (1-1-1-0, 3 pts) started the game with five goals, followed by the Seattle Thunderbirds (1-1-1-0, 3 pts) scoring five goals to even the score. Parker Wotherspoon netted the game winning goal in overtime to give the Americans a 6-5 win in front of 3,011 at the Toyota Center on Sunday night.

The Americans scored first for the first time this season, as Jordan Topping skated from behind the net and attempted the wrap around, banging in the second attempt for a 1-0 lead. Tri-City increased the advantage to 2-0, as Vladislav Lukin skated in on a breakaway and fired a shot stick side into the net. Parker Bowles put the Americans up 3-0, as he fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle into the goal on the power play. Tri-City notched another on the power play late in the first, as Beau McCue lit the lamp to make it 4-0 after the first period.

Early in the second, the Americans made the score 5-0 on a beautiful goal from Juuso Valimaki. Seattle got on the board three minutes into the second, as Alexander True beat Evan Sarthou. The deficit decreased to three goals 6:31 into the second on a Kaden Elder goal. The Thunderbird's Gustav Olhaver scored 16:53 into the second, and True notched his second of the night, shorthanded, with six seconds remaining in the period to cut the lead to 5-4 going into the third.

Seattle tied the game 1:42 into the third, as Keegan Kolesar fired a shot top shelf to even the score at five. Both teams buckled down on defense after the game was tied, with 10 shots total in the third period. Neither team found a winner in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Midway through overtime, Tyler Sandhu and Parker Wotherspoon skated into the zone, with Sandhu feeding it to Wotherspoon, shooting it through the legs of Logan Flodell for the game winner.

Tri-City was 2-of-4 on the power play, its first power play goals of the season, and spent eight minutes in the penalty box. Seattle couldn't convert any of its four power play attempts and also recorded eight penalty minutes.

Evan Sarthou stopped 17 shots in the win. Taz Burman was pulled after allowing four goals on 10 shots, with Logan Flodell coming in late in the first period and making 14 saves in the loss.

Tri-City will hit the road for three games in Canada, starting with the Kamloops Blazers (0-4-0-0, 0 pts) this Wednesday, Oct. 7. Game time is at 7 p.m. at the Interior Savings Centre.
