Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
For the Winnipeg Goldeyes to keep their playoff hopes alive, they are going to have to win almost every series during the last month of the American Association season. Friday night in Gary they took another step towards that.
The Goldeyes never trailed against the Gary SouthShore RailCats Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard and took two of three games in the series with a 9-5 win before 4,318 fans.
With the win the Goldeyes improve to 33-37 on the season and move to six games back of the Kansas City T-Bones and Joplin Blasters in the American Association wild card race.
The victory is also No. 523 for manager Rick Forney at the helm of the Goldeyes. He needs one more win to pass Hal Lanier for the most wins by a Goldeyes manager.
Winnipeg got out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Casey Haerther's RBI single was followed by a Josh Mazzola RBI double and Ryan Babineau RBI fielder's choice.
After Gary cut the Goldeyes lead to 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second, the teams exchanged runs in the third inning.
Reggie Abercrombie led off the fourth inning with a solo home run and the Goldeyes added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend the lead to 7-3.
Gary scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to cut Winnipeg's lead to a run, but the Goldeyes pulled away in the top of the ninth after Brad Boyer drove in two runs with a single to seal the win.
Haerther, Mazzola and Casio Grider each had three hits for the Goldeyes, while Boyer and Babineau paced the visitors with two RBI.
Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl picked up his first win in a Goldeyes uniform after going 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and striking out four. Chuck Fontana suffered the loss for Gary.
Mark Pope and Mike Noteware worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief out of tired Goldeyes bullpen. It took nearly 24 innings to play the first two games of the series.
The Goldeyes continue this six-game road trip in St. Paul, beginning with Game 1 of a three-game series with the Saints Saturday night at CHS Field. Staff ace and reigning American Association pitcher of the month and week Nick Hernandez (8-4, 2.20) will take the ball for the Goldeyes against St. Paul's Jeff Shields (10-1, 3.04).
The game can be heard live on Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster, beginning with Around the Association at 6 p.m., or watched live on Americanassociationbaseball.tv. Game time is 7 p.m.
Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the Shaw Park box office.
