Wichita Wingnuts News Release

QUEBEC CITY, QC (August 6, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts faced off against a pitcher who had not allowed a run in 35.0 straight innings on Thursday night in Quebec. The bottom of the lineup, with help from David Espinosa, provided enough offense for starter Eddie Medina and three members of the bullpen as the Wingnuts held on for a white-knuckle 3-1 victory in game two of the series.

Karl Gelinas (9-3), the Quebec ace, was every part as dominant as expected through the first five innings of the game. The Wingnuts own starter, Eddie Medina, matched him pitch-for-pitch. The superb pitching led to a scoreless tie after five innings with each offense having just one hit. Wichita (43-27) broke the scoreless streak of Gelinas in the sixth. Jayce Ray singled to lead off the inning and was bunted to second base by Jerry Gonzalez.  David Espinosa followed with a line drive up the middle to make it 1-0.

Quebec (39-27) answered quickly in the bottom half of the same inning. Alexei Bell doubled to open the frame, immediately placing a runner in scoring position. Leo Vargas made a fantastic diving play on a Kalian Sams ground ball for the second out which brought Will Walsh to the plate. The left fielder looped a single into right field that tied the score.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Wingnuts offense awoke once again.  Brent Dean and Jayce Ray knocked back-to-back singles off of Gelinas. Gonzalez came through with a two-RBI double down the left field line to put Wichita back in front 3-1. Gelinas lasted 7.0 innings and gave up three runs on six hits.

Medina (2-0) departed the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after walking Yordan Manduley. He allowed just the lone run on three hits and struck out six in his second appearance as a Wingnut. Iden Nazario walked one batter, before finishing off the inning with a fly ball to left from Jonathan Malo.

Medina's former teammate with the Old Orchard Beach Surge, Luis Pardo, came on for the eighth. After recording the first two outs without an issue, Pardo was able to force two ground balls, but the Nuts' defense committed an error on each of them to allow the tying run on base. Pardo then walked Tim Smith to load the bases. Quebec sent pinch-hitter Jean-Luc Blaquiere to the plate in place of Cedric Vallieres. Pardo managed to strike him out on a slider way to leave the bases full and hold the two run cushion.

Daniel Bennett quickly finished off the Capitales in the ninth inning by retiring the side in order. He struck out a pair on his way to recording his second save.

The rubber match of the series will take place in Stade Municipal at 7:05 p.m. EST on Friday night. RHP Scott Richmond (3-1) will be opposed by LHP Sheldon McDonald (7-4) of Quebec.
