Wichita Wingnuts News Release
QUEBEC CITY, QC - The Wichita Wingnuts and Quebec Capitales engaged in a series that featured a playoff-like atmosphere over the past three days at Stade Municipal in Quebec City. The rubber match of the series on Friday night was a fantastic end to the interleague match-up. A sacrifice fly from catcher Jean-Luc Blaquiere scored a tagging Kalian Sams, who began the inning at second, to allow the Capitales to walk-off in 11.
Quebec (40-28) took the first lead in the second inning against Scott Richmond. With two outs and the bases empty, third baseman Josue Peley drove his second home run of the year over the wall in left. That knock made it 1-0 Quebec.
The Capitales added to their advantage with another single run in the sixth. Will Walsh reached scoring position on a double with one out. Richmond retired the next batter on a line drive to center for the second out. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed the runner to cross home plate without a ball being put in play and made the score 2-0. Richmond never allowed another run over his seven innings of work. He struck out seven and gave up five hits.
The Wingnuts (43-29) couldn't get to Quebec starter Sheldon McDonald until the seventh inning. Matt Padgett opened the frame with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice ground ball. T.J. Mittelstaedt put the Nuts on the board with an RBI double that made it 2-1. After the second out of the inning, Brent Dean also came through with a double to tie the score. McDonald departed following the inning, having allowed two runs on six hits and recording five strikeouts.
The next three innings featured plenty of opportunities, but neither team could muster enough offense to take the lead or win the game. Once the 11th inning began, the international rule came into play, placing the final batter from the previous inning on second base. Wichita could not score Leo Vargas, instead grounding out to shortstop three consecutive times.
Quebec bunted Kalian Sams to third and the fly ball to center field from the catcher Blaquiere ended the game. Deryk Hooker (3-2) received the victory after working 2.0 scoreless innings and Daniel Bennett (0-7) suffered the hard luck defeat.
The Wingnuts return home to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday night to face their division rival the Joplin Blasters. RHP Tim Brown (8-2) will be on the mound for the 5:05 p.m. start. It is Bark in the Park Night so feel free to bring your canine along!
