Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It was another late night at U.S. Steel Yard for the Goldeyes.

For the second straight day, the Goldeyes and the Gary SouthShore RailCats sent the game to extra innings. But this time, the RailCats came out on top, as the Goldeyes lost 5-4 in the bottom 13 th before 2,980 fans on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Goldeyes fall to a 32-37 record, while the RailCats improve to 32-37. Both teams now sit seven games behind the Kansas City T-Bones in the American Association wild card race.

The Goldeyes took an early 2-0 lead in the third when Casey Haerther scored Casio Grider on an RBI single and Brad Boyer added another on a sacrifice fly to right field, but the Fish struggled to generate any offense through the next five innings, as the RailCats pitching staff retired 17 consecutive Winnipeg batters.

The lack of run support cost the Goldeyes. The RailCats added runs in the sixth and eighth to tie the game at 2, but Winnipeg reliever Rett Varner struck out the side in order in the bottom ninth to keep the Goldeyes alive and send the game to extra innings.

The teams each scored once with the international tiebreaker rule in effect in both the 11 th and 12th innings before the Goldeyes stranded runners on first and third in the top 13 th and the RailCats scored from third on a wild pitch to take the game 5-4.

Haerther led the Goldeyes offense and went 2-for-6 with two RBIs, while Adam Heisler had one hit and two runs scored.

Winnipeg starter Kyle Anderson pitched five innings, gave up one run on five hits and took a no-decision, while Goldeyes reliever Brad Mincey struck out three and surrendered one run on one hit to suffer the loss. RailCats closer and former Goldeye Chris Bodishbaugh gave up two runs in four innings to claim the win.

"It was a tough loss," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said after the game. "It was a battle of the bullpens there at the end. The back of the bullpen has been doing a heck of a job, and Kyle [Anderson] did a good job tonight and kept them off the board until the sixth."

Right-hander Edwin Carl will take the mound for Winnipeg Friday night at 7, as the Goldeyes look to win the three-game series before continuing their road trip against the St. Paul Saints Saturday night.

The Goldeyes will return to Winnipeg Tuesday night for the first of a six-game homestand against the Sioux Falls Canaries and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
