Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes can still salvage a series tie in Fargo.

On Wednesday evening at Fargo's Newman Outdoor Field, Ace Walker had a solid start and Chris Roberson and Yurendell de Caster each drove in two runs as the Goldeyes beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8-6.

Walker pitched six complete innings, allowing only three runs on seven scattered hits while Roberson went two-for-three with two runs scored and two RBI as the Goldeyes put a halt to a two-game losing streak in Fargo. De Caster drove in the winning run as the Goldeyes pounded out 14 hits. Price Kendall and Luis Alen each had three.

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 48-34 and pulled to within five and a half games of first-place Fargo in the race for first in the American Association's North Division. The Fish also put a halt to a nine-game losing streak against Fargo.

"There is quit in Fargo at all," said Goldeyes pitching coach Bill Pulsipher. "We have to play a full 27-out game to beat that team. They proved it again tonight. It was a big win for us tonight. I was looking at it as a must win for us."

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the first as leadoff man Michael Coles doubled and eventually scored on an error by Fargo starter Alex Caldera.

Winnipeg made it 2-0 in the second as Kyle Day walked and came around to score on a single by Price Kendall and then Winnipeg took a 3-0 lead in the fourth as Coles doubled and scored on a double by Roberson.

Fargo tied it at 3-3 heading into the top of the sixth, but the Goldeyes struck for two more. Kendall singled and reached third when Jon Weber hit into a double play. Roberson was hit by a pitch and then de Caster singled home Kendall and sent Roberson to third. Roberson scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

The Goldeyes made it 7-3 in the eighth as Kendall singled to lead off the inning, but was erased on a ground ball as Coles was safe on a fielder's choice. With two out, Roberson singled, de Caster singled to drive in Coles and then Josh Mazzola drove in Roberson with an infield single.

After Fargo scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Goldeyes added their eighth run of the night when Kyle Day singled and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.

Fargo made it exciting by putting up two more in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer by Zach Penprase but newly-acquired closer Chris Bodishbaugh got out of a jam to earn the save.

Walker (7-4, 3.72 ERA) got the win for Winnipeg while Fargo reliever Joe Harris (1-1, 2.09 ERA), suffered the loss for the RedHawks. Bodishbaugh picked up his first save as a Goldeye.

The Goldeyes and RedHawks will play the final game of this four-game series tonight at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
