St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints fell behind big early, stormed back to tie the game, but a 10th inning in which they committed four errors, giving them a franchise record tying six on the evening, was enough to do them in as they lost to the Gary SouthShore Railcats 14-8 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,940.
With the game tied at seven going into the top of the ninth the Railcats would take the lead on an unfortunate bounce for the Saints. With two outs and Zac Mitchell at first David Cooper hit a routine grounder to Joe Spiers at second. The ball, however, hit the lip of the grass and bounced over the head of Spiers sending Mitchell to third. Adam Klein followed with an RBI single to center giving the Railcats an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, however, Ole Sheldon came through with a solo homer to straight away center, his second of the night and 18th of the season, tying the game at eight. The Saints had an opportunity to win it as Ronnie Bourquin walked with two outs and Spiers singled him to second, but Tanner Townsend grounded out to short to end the inning.
In the 10th inning the Saints fell apart at the seams. The Railcats sent 12 men to the plate, got four hits while the Saints committed four errors and walked three batters that led to a six run inning. Tanner Townsend committed two errors in the inning, one on a grounder and the other on a throw from second baseman Spiers to Tanner covering second in which he dropped the ball. Tanner Townsend made three errors on the evening tying a franchise record which has now been done five times, the last by Brian Sprout on May 17, 2007 vs. Sioux City. Also in the inning Adam Frost had a throwing error in left field and catcher Alex Garabedian dropped a ball at home tagging a runner. The four errors in the inning gave the Saints six on the evening, tying a franchise record. It's the fourth time the Saints have committed six errors in a game, the last time on August 6, 2000 vs. Duluth-Superior.
The Saints trailed the game 7-1 after three, but scored three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Garabedian, a wild pitch that scored Townsend and an RBI single by Frost.
Sheldon made it 7-5 in the fifth when he hit a solo homer to left, his first of the night and 17th of the season.
In the sixth the Saints tied the game up when Tanner Townsend walked and with two outs Frost roped a double to left scoring Townsend. Frost raced to third on the throw home and scored when the ball went to the backstop on the throw.
The Saints will have Thursday off and begin a three game series on Friday night at Shaw Park against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (5-3, 6.28) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
