Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS -- On Rod Scurry's gem and a pair of clutch hits, the Sioux Falls Pheasants won a rubber game with a 2-1 defeat of the Laredo Lemurs on Thursday night.

Scurry (4-6) blanked the Lemurs into the ninth inning, and the Pheasants won their second straight before 3,823 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

In his 12th career start as a converted reliever, Scurry scattered three hits across eight-plus innings, one in the third, eighth and ninth inning. He struck out five and walked two for his fourth victory of the year.

"[Pheasants catcher Al Quintana and I] worked on our sinker and cutter combination, and it worked for most of the game," said Scurry. "Once we could tell that they were sitting on those pitches, we changed it up and kept them off balance."

The Pheasants tallied their only runs of the game with two outs in the fourth inning. Trevor Lawhorn's single plated the first run, and Jake Taylor's double scored him for the 2-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Scurry saw just four batters beyond the minimum in the first eight innings, never allowing a man to reach second until Jimmy Mojica's leadoff double in the ninth.

"Some days we'll have the same stuff I had today, but they'll find holes and get through," said Scurry. "Today it wasn't that case. We made good pitches and got the good result."

In the ninth inning, the Pheasants walked a tightrope. Mojica's leadoff double forced Scurry to exit. Kyle Mertins entered in relief, and in the next at-bat, Palmer Karr Jr. singled in Mojica in to cut the lead to 2-1.

Mertins then struck out John Allen, Laredo's best hitter, but Javier Brito's double followed to put two in scoring position, Mertins intentionally walked the bases loaded with only one out and struck out Brian Peterson and Stephen Pearson to earn his third save of the season.

"They had a couple of weak hits, but [Mertins] bore down and got the job done," said Scurry. "He came up big with those two strikeouts to finish the game, and it was exciting to watch."

Ryan Sasaki (4-3) started for Laredo and suffered the loss. He tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He also struck out two and walked two.

The Pheasants travel to Gary, Ind., to take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats in a three-game series starting at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, August 17. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
