Fish Get Angry to Even Series with Saltdogs
June 5, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Angry Fish lives.
One day after the Winnipeg Goldeyes blew a 10-7 lead in the bottom of the 10th and lost 11-10 to the Lincoln Saltdogs, the Fish came back with an angry lineup.
After the two teams played scoreless baseball for the first four innings, the Goldeyes bats exploded for four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the eighth en route to a 9-0 shellacking of the hometown Saltdogs.
Goldeyes starter Matt Rusch pitched seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out five as the Fish improved to 12-5 on the season and remained in first place in the American Association's North Division.
"With Rusch pitching the way he did tonight, it really saved our bullpen," pitching coach Bill Pulsipher told the TSN 1290 Sports Radio post-game show. "I thought his fastball would be too much for these guys. He has a fastball that runs 90-92 miles per hour and that's a lot for the league. Luis (Alen) called a great game and Matt was phenomenal. It's a great combination.
"The Magic of baseball: good pitching, great defense and timely hitting. We scored six of our nine runs with two outs. That's timely hitting."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the fifth as Josh Mazzola was hit by a pitch and then, after two quick outs, David Narodowski singled, sending Mazzola to third. Price Kendall then tripled scoring both Mazzola and Narodowski and then Chris Roberson singled to drive home Kendall. Roberson then stole second and scored on a double by Jon Weber.
In the sixth, with two out, Amos Ramon walked, Narodowski walked, Kendall singled and then Roberson walked with the bases loaded to score Ramon.
With the score 5-0 in the seventh, the Goldeyes made it a rout. Yurendell de Caster was safe on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Mazzola. Ridge Carpenter then doubled to score Mazzola and then Carpenter went to third on a single by Ramon and scored on a single by Kendall.
In the eighth, Weber walked, went to second on a single by de Caster and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Weber scored on a ground out by Luis Alen and that did it. 9-zip.
Matt Rusch got the win and lowered his ERA to 2.31. Pete Parise suffered the loss. Craig James, who was lit up for two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Monday night, was flawless over two innings of relief.
The Goldeyes and Saltdogs will go at again tonight in Lincoln. Paul Edmonds will bring you the game, live on TSN 1290 Sports Radio, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
