DeBarr's Two-Hitter, Triple Streak Give 'Hogs Win
June 5, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- The Grand Prairie AirHogs began the bottom of the fourth inning on Tuesday with three consecutive triples, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, as they got another strong pitching performance from Nick DeBarr - a two-hitter with four striketous - to beat the Laredo Lemurs 5-1 at QuikTrip Park.
The AirHogs (10-8) had five hits through the first three innings against Laredo's Leonard Giammanco (0-2), who was making his first professional start, but no runs. Meanwhile, the Lemurs (8-10) had their first seven hitters set down by DeBarr (4-0), but a two-out walk to Jeff Vincent in the third was followed by a Jimmy Mojica triple to right to give Laredo the lead.
Things changed quickly in the bottom of the fourth, starting when Lockwood tripled on the first pitch of the inning over the head of rightfielder Kevin Butler. Brian Myrow then sent a triple to right-center to tie the game, and David Thomas followed with a first-pitch liner to left-center that got past Jeff Vincent to give Grand Prairie the lead and tie the American Association record with their fourth triple of the game.
Yasutsugu Nishimoto's one-out single later that inning made it 3-1, Andres Rodriguez's solo shot in the fifth gave the AirHogs a three-run lead and new 'Hog Mike Brownstein's bases-loaded walk in the seventh finished the scoring.
That was more than enough for DeBarr, who faced the minimum after Mojica's triple, and retired the last 13 Lemurs in a row. The righty struck out four and walked two to earn his fourth win of the year.
Notes: Kansas City had four triples against the AirHogs on May 25...All nine AirHogs had at least one hit...McMurray had the other Grand Prairie triple...DeBarr had seven 1-2-3 innings...The 106 pitches DeBarr threw were the most in his three complete games...The AirHogs had at least one hit in the first seven innings and were not retired in order in any frame, but left 12 on base...The last two Major League teams to have three straight triples were Toronto last year and Montreal in 1981 - each team lost at home in that game. The MLB record is four straight triples by Boston on May 6, 1934 against Detroit.
