Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Sioux City Explorers 8-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.
Josh Lowey tossed seven terrific innings to earn the win, while John Rodriguez homered for a second time in three games and collected four RBI.
The Wingnuts gave Lowey early support, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan Khoury and Jake Kahaulelio hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. After Sioux City starter Alain Quijano retired Rodriguez on a flyball to center, Juan Richardson helped the Wingnuts load the bases with an infield single to second. Mitch Einertson followed with a three-run double to left-center.
Lowey held the Explorers scoreless over the first five innings, and retired nine straight batters from the third into the sixth. Lowey allowed five hits, walked only one, and struck out three to improve to 3-0. Lowey has won 14 consecutive decisions dating back to last year.
Wichita stretched the lead to 6-0 with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Khoury and Kahaulelio set the table with back-to-back walks and moved to second and third on a wild pitch from Quijano. Rodriguez lined a double down the left field line to make it 5-0. Rodriguez made a heads up baserunning play, taking third base on Einertson's groundball to the left side. C.J. Ziegler drove in Rodriguez with an infield single to shortstop, and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Explorers scored their lone runs in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run double to left from Kris Sanchez.
Wichita got the runs back in the bottom half when Rodriguez homered to right-center with two outs.
Lowey retired the side in order in the top of the seventh and finished the night with 90 pitches. Edgar Martinez and Jeff Nadeau each worked a scoreless relief inning to close out the game.
Khoury and Kahaulelio combined for three hits, three walks, a hit batsman, and five of the Wingnuts' eight runs. Ziegler has also reached base in all 18 of the team's games this season.
