American Association Game Recaps

June 5, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release

Grand Prairie 5, Laredo 1

The AirHogs hit the ever-rare three consecutive triples to open the fourth inning, scoring three runs in the frame and going on to beat Laredo, 5-1. 1B Trent Lockwood got the three-bagger party started in the inning's first at-bat and went 2-for-5 with a run scored. It was Lockwood's first triple of the year. AirHogs starting pitcher Nick DeBarr threw a complete-game two-hitter, picking up his fourth win in as many starts and lowering his already impressive ERA to 0.87. Laredo's lone run came in the third inning, when Jimmy Mojica tripled in Jeff Vincent. It was Mojica's only hit of the game from the leadoff spot.

St. Paul 2, New Jersey 0 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Saints starting pitcher Robert Coe gave the bullpen a rest in Game 1 of St. Paul's doubleheader with New Jersey on Tuesday, throwing a complete-game three-hitter, striking out three Jackals batters to earn his second win. Coe's ERA is now 3.06. The St. Paul offense struggled against Jackals starter Matt Chico but finally pushed a run across in the fifth to take the lead for good. Though saddled with the loss, Chico threw an impressive 5.2 innings, allowing only one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Saints RF Jose Hernandez scored the team's second run in the seventh to cap off a good offensive night. Hernandez walked twice and went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

New Jersey 3, St. Paul 2 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

Jackals 3B Nick Giarraputo singled in two of his club's three first-inning runs, helping turn an early 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 advantage that turned into a 3-2 win over the St. Paul Saints. Giarraputo later scored on a double by RF Carlos Guzman. Starting Jackals pitcher Steve Fox struck out 10 Saints batters and registered all but the final two outs, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. Fox now has 30 strikeouts to just 11 walks on the season in four starts. Saints RF Jose Hernandez hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give his team a 1-0 lead but went 0-for-2 from that point on.

Winnipeg 9, Lincoln 0

With a pair of aces on the mound Tuesday night, the Goldeyes didn't need much help at the plate. That didn't stop Winnipeg from putting up nine runs on Lincoln, defeating the Saltdogs, 9-0. Starting Winnipeg pitcher Matthew Rusch lowered his ERA to 2.31 after throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out as many batters (5) as he allowed hits. In the batter's box for Winnipeg, leadoff 2B Price Kendall went 3-for-5, hitting his first triple of the year, batting in two runs and scoring once. Kendall raised his season average to .319. Every Winnipeg batter joined Kendall with at least one hit, while seven pushed one or more runs in.

Amarillo 5, El Paso 4 (11 innings)

The Sox rally caps were on Tuesday night, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extras, where C Alberto Espinosa ended the 5-4 game with a walkoff home run in the 11th inning. The homer was the second of the year for Espinosa, who went 3-for-4 on the night with a run and two RBI. El Paso scored two runs in the first inning on a home run from Palmer Karr Jr. and eventually led, 4-0. But Amarillo's strong close proved too much for the Diablos. Karr Jr. went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI, pulling his season average up to .240.

Fargo-Moorhead 8, Kansas City 6

It was a game of late-inning offensive heroics between Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City on Tuesday, with the RedHawks' four eighth-inning runs giving them enough for an 8-6 victory. Fargo-Moorhead 2B Carlo Cota pushed in two of those runs with his fifth double of the year, without a doubt the highlight of his 2-for-4 night. Cota also scored twice. The T-Bones picked up two outs quickly in the top of the ninth, but gave the home RedHawks crowd something to worry about, anyway, scoring two runs to pull within two. But RedHawks reliever Tom Boleska closed the door on the comeback, forcing T-Bones 2B Reid Fronk to ground out and end the game.

Gary SouthShore 7, Sioux Falls 6 (10 innings)

The RailHawks batted around the lineup in the top of the first inning, scoring six runs and appearing to be in control. But the 7-6, 10-inning Gary SouthShore victory turned out to be anything but easy. After Sioux Falls tied the score at six runs apiece with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, it appeared the home Pheasants had enough momentum to pull out an improbable victory. But RailHawks pitching calmed the Sioux Falls bats long enough for PH/C Craig Maddox to single in SS Kyle Haines for what turned out to be the game-winning run in the top of the 10th. Haines scored two of his club's seven runs, the only player in the contest to reach home plate on more than one occasion.

Wichita 8, Sioux City 2

Wingnuts DH John Rodriguez hit a home run and was responsible for five of Wichita's runs in the club's 8-2 victory over Sioux City. Rodriguez - who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI - was one of three Wingnuts batters with multiple hits, joining leadoff SS Ryan Khoury and CF Mitch Einertson. Einertson hit his fourth double of the season and batted in three runs on his 2-for-4 night. Sioux City 1B Kris Sanchez picked up his fifth two-bagger of the year, going 2-for-4 and batting in both Sioux City runs. Starting Wichita pitcher Josh Lowey threw seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts, earning the win.
