Fish Come Back to Win on Record-Breaking Night

ST. PAUL, MN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (55-40) scored three late runs to take the second of a three-game series 3-2 over the St. Paul Saints (58-37) on Wednesday night at CHS Field.

The Goldeyes trailed the Saints 2-0 when David Rohm led off the eighth inning with a double, which extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. Wes Darvill followed with a base hit, and after Casio Grider struck out and Jacob Rogers flied out to centre, Adam Heisler singled to score Rohm from third.

Winnipeg almost tied the game when Maikol Gonzalez hit a two-out single to right later in the inning, but the Saints tagged Wes Darvill out at the plate to keep it a 2-1 game.

After a scoreless bottom eighth, the Fish rallied in the top ninth. Reggie Abercrombie and Josh Romanski hit one-out singles to put the tying and leading runs on base. Five pitches later, Rohm ground out to second, but Romanski's takeout slide broke up the potential double play to keep the Goldeyes alive.

With runners on the corners, Wes Darvill doubled to score Romanski and Abercrombie and give the Goldeyes their first lead of the series. The Saints sent a runner to second on an error charged to Darvill in the top ninth, but closer Winston Abreu put up two swinging strikeouts to seal the Goldeyes' 3-2 win.

Eric Eadington (4-3, 2.93) pitched the final two outs in the bottom eighth for the win, and Winston Abreu struck out two in the ninth for his first save with the Goldeyes and his fifth overall this season.

Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern (7-3, 3.68) took a no-decision after he gave up a two-run homer in the bottom first. He allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked two through six complete innings.

The Saints' Mark Hamburger (12-5, 3.19) suffered the loss but set two records, the first of which came in the top seventh. Hamburger recorded two early outs in the inning to bring him to a total 155 2/3 innings pitched this season, breaking the previous American Association record of 155 1/3. After tonight's game, he now boasts a total of 157 2/3 innings pitched this year.

Hamburger set his second record of the night when he pitched his seventh complete game of the season. The previous league single-season record was six - a total three different players had reached.

Josh Romanski led off the top second with the Goldeyes' 439th offensive walk of the year to set a new American Association single-season team record. The Gary SouthShore RailCats previously held the record after drawing 438 walks in 2012.

With the win, the Goldeyes have a one-game lead in the American Association wild card race and sit three games behind St. Paul in the North Division.

The Goldeyes will send right-hander Mikey O'Brien (10-4, 4.60) to face fellow righty Robert Coe (11-3, 4.46) on Thursday night at 7. The Goldeyes will open a four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on Friday night.
