Wingnuts Chavez Named Player of the Month

WICHITA, Kans. - Wichita Wingnuts first baseman Matt Chavez was named the American Association's Rawlings Player of the Month for August the league announced Thursday, giving Wichita their first monthly award of the season.

Chavez had a huge month for the Wingnuts, going 38-for-105 (.362) at the plate to boost his season average to .355, which is currently the top batting average in the American Association. The 27-year old also launched eight home runs in August, including three multi-homer games, two of which have come in the last four games. Most recently, Chavez went deep twice in Wednesday night's win over Joplin, which clinched the South Division Championship for Wichita.

The former San Francisco Don also drove in 26 for the month, tying him with Winnipeg's Casio Grider for the most RBIs in the league during August. Chavez now has 59 runs batted in in 63 games this season.

The award is the second received by Chavez during the 2016 campaign, as he was also named the American Association's Player of the Week for the week of July 18-24.
