SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Gary SouthShore RailCats' (49-46) comeback fell one run short in a 4-3 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries (36-59) in front of 1,659 people at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The loss was the third straight for the RailCats who were in first place in the Central Division before the losing skid began. Still, the RailCats are only one game back of the Lincoln Saltdogs and Sioux City X's who play each other tomorrow. Each team has five games left in the regular season.

Andy DeJesus led the game off with a single. The RailCats' early baserunner was erased on a double play off the bat of Reggie Wilson. EJ Devarie followed with a double but the inning ended in a groundout in the next at bat.

Sioux Falls pitcher Dylan Thompson proved to be a master at getting out of tough spots throughout the game. The RailCats left eight runners on base in the contest, adding to their league-leading number of runners left stranded. Thompson recorded a quality start, going seven innings and giving up three runs on eight hits.

The RailCats were able to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Alex Crosby got aboard with a walk and Jaime Del Valle followed with another base on balls. Colin Willis grounded into a fielder's choice that was misplayed by the shortstop to allow Crosby to score on the play.

Sioux Falls claimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Cameron Monger and Patrick Fiala hit back-to-back homers to begin the frame and grab the 2-1 advantage. Richard Castillo had been nearly perfect before giving up the consecutive blasts.

The Canaries continued to produce on offense in the sixth inning. Jake Taylor drew a walk and advanced on a two-out infield single from Blake Schmit. Then, Monger doubled to score both runners and grow the Sioux Falls lead to 4-1.

Castillo was removed after the double and Conrad Wozniak struck out Fiala to end the frame. Castillo was charged with the loss in the 5.2 inning start. He surrendered four runs on seven hits to break his streak of three straight wins.

Gary SoutShore showed life in the top of the seventh inning. Chase Harris singled and stole second base as DeJesus came to plate with two down. The switch-hitter doubled to score Harris. Wilson followed with another two-bagger that scored DeJesus and trimmed the lead to 4-3. Devarie couldn't continue the rally and grounded out to second base to end the frame.

The RailCats got base hits from Frank Martinez and Jaime Del Valle but left two runners on in the eighth inning. The Canaries brought in closer Jose Ortega in the ninth and he shut the RailCats down in order to earn the save and seal the win.

Wozniak tossed 2.1 innings of hitless and scoreless relief for Greg Tagert's squad. The rookie struck out four batters and didn't issue a walk.

Four RailCats had multi-hit games as the team outhit the Canaries 10-7. The RailCats committed one error but it did not lead to a run. Crosby reached base twice to extend his on-base streak to a team-high 18 games.

The RailCats have one more game in South Dakota before heading home for the final four games of the season. First pitch is at 7:05 PM and coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
