September 1, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

The Wichita Wingnuts finished off a sweep of the Joplin Blasters with a 3-1 victory Thursday night, in their final home game of the regular season at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

With Joplin (35-61) leading 1-0 in the seventh, the Wingnuts (60-36) rallied to take the lead. T.J. Mittelstaedt started the frame by drawing a walk, then stealing both second and third. Matt Chavez brought him home with a single, which forced Blasters starter Santos Arias (2-2) from the contest. After a Martin Medina double, Brennen Salgado put Wichita in front with a two-run single.

After getting seven innings from Tim Brown (9-4), Wichita turned it over to their bullpen for the final six outs. Chad Nading worked a scoreless eighth, and Frankie Reed struck out the side in the ninth to collect his 21st save of the year.

Joplin's only run of the evening came in the third. Mitch Glasser singled with one out, and Geraldo Valentin then followed with an RBI double to put the visitors up 1-0.

Brown got on a roll after that, getting a double play to end the third, and then retiring the next 11 Blasters in a row. The veteran righty allowed one more hit in the seventh, but then induced an inning-ending double play from Mark Krueger to bring his night to an end. Brown allowed five hits in his seven innings to pick up his 12th quality start of the year, which leads the Wingnuts.

Wichita finishes their 2016 regular season home schedule at 33-18, the second-best home record in the American Association. The victory also keeps the Wingnuts ahead of the St. Paul Saints in the race for the league's best record.

The Wingnuts will hit the road Friday to begin their final regular season series against the Laredo Lemurs down at Uni-Trade Stadium. Wichita will turn to righty Alex Boshers (12-3, 3.12), while Laredo has yet to announce Friday's starting pitcher. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
