Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Gary SouthShore RailCats' bullpen surrendered six runs in the sixth inning to lose their fourth straight game. The Sioux Falls Canaries tallied four doubles in the frame and completed the sweep of the RailCats with a 9-7 win.

The RailCats scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to close the gap in what was a 9-3 game, but the comeback fell two runs short. Sioux Falls closer Jose Ortega had to be inserted to the game to get the Canaries out of the jam.

The loss puts Gary SouthShore in third place and two games back of first place in the Central Division. Sioux City beat Lincoln, so the X's hold the tiebreaker over both teams. The RailCats will need to win three more games than Sioux City in the four remaining games in order to beat them for the division crown.

For the second night in a row, the RailCats grabbed the first lead and looked good early. Andy DeJesus started the game with a base hit, also for the second straight game. He was swapped on the bases for Reggie Wilson after a fielder's choice. EJ Devarie walked and Frank Martinez singled to load the bases. After a strikeout of Alex Crosby, Kris Goodman reached on a fielder's choice and Wilson scored on an error by center fielder Ethan Chapman.

Sioux Falls used an extra-base hit to help tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. JC Linares doubled to start the frame and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Blake Schmit followed with a base hit that scored Linares. RailCats starter Travis McGee was able to limit the damage to just one run.

McGee wasn't as lucky in the bottom of the third. Chapman started things off with a single and moved to third on a Jake Taylor double. Chapman scored on a wild pitch that was part of an at bat in which Linares was walked. Schmit hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Taylor and make the score 3-1.

The RailCats tied the game in the fifth. Chase Harris began the inning with a walk before the next two RailCats recorded outs. Devarie got his second hit of the game and Martinez walked to load the bases. Crosby came through with a base hit to score two runs and make tie the game 3-3.

The bottom of the sixth inning was disastrous for the RailCats. Carlos Pinales was put in to pitch the inning and issued a leadoff walk. Schmit, who walked, stole second base and moved to third on a fly out by Cameron Monger. Greg Tagert inserted Moises Melendez to clean up the situation. The lefty did the opposite. The Canaries collected four doubles and six runs before Melendez could get the third out.

Sioux Falls put their pitching coach on the mound with a 9-3 lead in the 9th inning. Demetrius Banks is also listed on the roster as a pitcher and threw in one game earlier in the season. Chase Harris feasted on the player/coach and hit his first home run of the season in the first at bat of the inning. The RailCats were able to get three more runs off of Banks on two hits and a walk before Ortega came in. The closer walked the first batter he faced but got John Holland to strike out to finish the game and let the Canaries escape with the win.

The RailCats left ten runners on base and tallied just two extra-base hits, both in the ninth inning. The Canaries totaled six doubles in the contest.

The RailCats come home for the final four games of the regular season. First pitch against the Joplin Blasters comes tomorrow at 7:10 PM with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
