Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

On Thursday afternoon, Isaac Hess was brilliant and the Winnipeg Goldeyes bats boomed.

That means that regardless of what happened Thursday night, the Goldeyes remained on top in the North.

Hess had his best start of the season, allowing only one run on two hits over eight strong innings, while seven Goldeyes had multi-hit games as Winnipeg routed the Sioux Falls Pheasants 12-1 in front of 5,475 spectators at Shaw Park.

Wes Long was terrific for the Fish, going four-for-five with a three-run homer, two runs scored and five RBI as Winnipeg improved to 49-34 and remained in first place in the American Association's North Division.

"I was disappointed with my performance on Wednesday night and I wanted to be as lot better to finish the series," Long told the Shaw TV post-game show. "So I got to the park early today and did some extra work in the cage. Then I just went there hoping to get some good pitches and I got them. It was a nice way to end the series."

Long was the best of a very good lot on Thursday. Lead-off man Price Kendall went two-for-four with a run and an RBI; Kody Kaiser hit a solo homer in the first inning to get the Goldeyes started and then finished with two hits in four trips with three runs scored and an RBI.

Brian Myrow went three-for-five with three runs scored and three RBI while Lou Ott had three hits and improved his batting average to .330, Jon Weber had two hits and an RBI and Luis Alen had two hits and a run driven in.

But perhaps the best performance of the day came from Hess who retired the first 11 men he faced, gave up a solo homer to Sioux Falls' Reggie Abercrombie and then retired the next seven he faced before giving up an opposite-field flare single to Gus Milner. In the end, Hess went eight complete innings and allowed one run on two hits as he gave manager Rick Forney the start he was after before this weekend's big series with Wichita.

"I felt good today and once I got going I really felt I was cruising," Hess said. "It's great to start winning. I wasn't as good in May and June as I am now and I've always been a firm believer in the theory that it's not how you start, but how you finish. I think we're all starting to finish well, and get ready for the playoffs."

Hess (6-3, 4.19 ERA) was the winning pitcher. Sioux Falls starter Adam Cowart, who gave up all 12 Winnipeg runs on 15 hits over just five innings, took the loss. There was no save, but Mike Williams pitched a scoreless ninth for the Goldeyes.

On Friday night, the Goldeyes will open a three-game weekend series against the Wichita Wingnuts at Shaw Park. It will be the first time ever that the Wingnuts and Goldeyes have met. Game time on Friday is 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
