AMARILLO, TX - The El Paso Diablos took 10 batters on Thursday night to get their first hit, but a five-run fourth inning following propelled them to a 7-5 win over the Amarillo Sox in front of 3,142 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Amarillo starter Corey Bass (4-4) got the loss, allowing six runs off seven hits in five innings. El Paso starter Jae Jung (3-4) got the win in allowing four runs off six hits in five and one-third innings. Diablos closer Kyle Cremers got the save, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.
The Sox got on the board first in the first inning. Matt Tucker hit a one-out triple and scored on a Lee Cruz RBI single. In the second, Adam De La Garza hit a one-out single, went to second on a groundout and scored on a Harrison Kain RBI single. Tim Alberts added a solo homerun in the third to take a 3-0 Amarillo lead.
The Diablos came back in the fifth inning. Maikol Gonzalez and Albenis Machado singled to lead off, while Nelson Teilon walked to load the bases. Javier Brito doubled to left-center field to score Gonzalez and Machado, while Uriak Marquez doubled to score Teilon and Brito. After an Alberto Espinosa bunt single to put runners on the corners, Brian Joynt hit into a double play to score Marquez from third for a 5-3 El Paso advantage.
El Paso added another run on a Telion solo homerun in the sixth, but Amarillo responded in the bottom half. Van Pope walked with one out, while Josh Banda hit a ball sharply to centerfield which bounded over Cory Drew's head to score Pope, give Banda an RBI triple and pull the Sox within two at 6-4.
In the seventh, Kain singled to lead off, stole second and third and scored on a Ron Fenwick RBI groundout to pull the deficit to one. El Paso added another run on a Marquez RBI double in the eighth to put the score 7-5.
The Sox couldn't get anyone going in the ninth off Cremers to fall by the score of 7-5.
