
Saints Take Series from Wingnuts

ST. PAUL, MN- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 8-7 to the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium on Thursday night.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints rallied for three runs after there were two outs and no one on base. Argelis Nunez hit a line drive double to center against Wingnuts' starter Chad Sherman, breaking a streak of 15 batters retired in a row. Kendy Batista relieved Sherman and allowed an infield single to Richard Mercado. With runners on first and second and two outs, Jonathan Van Every ripped a three-run home run down the right field line to give the Saints a 6-5 lead.
Ronnie Bourquin hit a two-run, opposite field home run to left in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-5.
The Wingnuts rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth to get back within one run. With second and third and two outs, Edwin Bellorin grounded a single up the middle against Kyle Foster to score Carlos Rivera and Jorge Delgado. Foster came back and retired the next four hitters through the ninth inning to earn the save.
Sherman retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the first inning before allowing a double to right-center from Ole Sheldon. Jason Cooper walked to put runners on first and second. After falling behind no balls and two strikes, Argelis Nunez worked a full count and then ripped a double into the left field corner that scored Sheldon and Cooper. Richard Mercado made it 3-0 Saints on a bloop double down the right field line.
Wichita scored twice in the top of the second to pull back within one run. Rivera drew a leadoff walk and took third on Delgado's double to right-center field. Josh Workman lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Rivera and advanced Delgado to third. Peter Barrows plated Delgado with a sacrifice fly to center.
Josh Horn doubled to left-center with one out in the top of the third and went to third on Richardson's single to left. Rivera tied the game with the Wingnuts' third sacrifice fly of the night.
Wichita took its only lead of the game in the top of the fourth. Workman led off with a walk and stole second base. Two batters later, Bellorin crushed a triple to right center field that made it 4-3 Wichita. Saints' second baseman Justin Snyder committed an error on a groundball hit by Jose Duran that allowed Bellorin to score the Wingnuts' fifth run.
Sherman took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings. Sherman walked two and struck out two.
Edwin Walker started for the Saints and was relieved after three innings in a no-decision. Walker allowed three earned runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out none.
Robert Coe earned the win in relief for St. Paul. Batista took the loss.
Richardson has hit safely in 10 games in a row. Jose Duran had a nine-game hitting streak come to an end.
The Wingnuts head to Shaw Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba for a three-game series against the Goldeyes beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson faces left-hander Luis Villareal.
