Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes slump continues.
Tuesday night in front of 4,964 spectators at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg, the Gary SouthShore RailCats came back from deficits of 4-0 and 8-6 and beat the Goldeyes 13-11.
After the Fish built a 4-0 first-inning lead, the RailCats put up six in the third to take a 6-4 advantage. Then the Goldeyes fought back. They scored three in the third and one more in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. But Gary scored one in the fifth, two more in the sixth and four in the eighth beat the Fish for the second straight night.
The Goldeyes just can't seem to win for losing. After they swept Sioux City on July 19, 20 and 21, the team has gone into a mid-season swoon. The Fish were swept in Sioux Falls and won one of three in Sioux City. They then came home and lost two of three to St. Paul and have now lost two straight to Gary. That's a 2-9 record in their last 11 games with four straight losses.
Gary did not go down 1-2-3 in any inning Tuesday night. Even when they didn't score they threatened. Cristian Guerrero hit a three-run homer, finished with three hits and drove in four runs; Mike Rohde had four singles, drove in two and scored four; and Kyle Haines had four hits and scored three times.
In the end, the Railcats had 13 runs on 18 hits while Goldeyes pitchers dished out six walks and made two of three errors. Even though they scored 13 runs, the Railcats also left 14 runners on base.
And yet, despite all of that, with Kody Kaiser's three-run homer in the eighth, the Goldeyes made a game of it and had a legitimate chance to come back and win it in the ninth. However, James Baker shut down the Goldeyes 1-2-3 in their final at bat and recorded his first save of the season.
The Fish finished with 11 runs on 13 hits. Kaiser had two hits, three runs batted in, two runs scored and extended his hitting streak to 21 games (the franchise record of 27 was set by Brent Metheny). Lou Ott had a single and a double, a run scored and two driven in while Luis Alen had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI and Wes Long had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Gary reliever Will Krout (4-1, 1.71 ERA) got the win while Goldeyes reliever Zach Baldwin (5-1, 5.81 ERA) suffered the loss. Baker got the save. Forney will have to wait at least one more day to record his 300th victory as the Goldeyes manager.
Wednesday night, the Goldeyes complete this three-game series with the Gary. Game time is 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
