Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (32-42) fell 5-1 to the Wichita Wingnuts (41-33) on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
RedHawks' ace, Jake Laber, entered tonight's game looking for revenge. Exactly one week ago, Wichita belted out eight hits and eight runs (all earned) on Laber in his worst outing of the year. Laber (8-5) was able to put together a much stronger outing this time around as he went eight innings allowing only two hits and two runs (both earned), but revenge was bittersweet as he was saddled with his fifth loss of the year.
After Laber's exit, the Wingnuts put together a ninth inning rally to stretch their lead to 5-1. Juan Richardson roped William Jackel's first pitch of the night off the wall in left field for a leadoff double. Josh Workman was intentionally walked to set up the double play. Peter Barrows and Jose Duran had different plans though as both came through with clutch singles to help the Wingnuts score three runs.
The RedHawks threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to mount a comeback. In the eighth inning, Nic Jackson crushed a line drive to center with a runner on base and a 2-1 score, but Brent Clevlen made a spectacular diving catch to kill the rally. Todd Jennings hit a deep fly to left field in the ninth inning that almost brought the Fargo-Moorhead faithful to their feet, only to have it caught on the warning track. Jennings would have plated three runs with only one out had the ball carried the fence.
Ryan Hinson (9-5) had a strong night for the Wingnuts. Hinson pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and one run (earned) while striking out seven en route to his ninth win of the season.
Kyle Nichols singled in the only run for the RedHawks in the first inning. Nichols was 2-for-4 on the night.
The RedHawks will play the second game of their three-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts on Wednesday night. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
