St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 1, 2011) - All it took was four hours and 22 minutes, 13 innings, a solo homer in the ninth to send it to extra innings and a two-run infield single, but in the end the St. Paul Saints won the eighth longest game in franchise history with a 4-2 victory in 13 innings.
With the Saints trailing 2-1 in the ninth Argelis Nunez led off the inning with a solo homer to right, his third of the season to tie the game at two.
Both teams had chances after that. The Pheasants loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but the newest Saint, left-handed pitcher Jesse English struck out Mark Shorey and got Brandon Sing to fly out to left-center to end the inning.
The Saints loaded the bases in the 12th with one out, but Justin Snyder fouled out to third and Ole Sheldon flew out to the warning track in left.
The Saints finally broke through in the 13th when Jason Cooper led off with a single. Nunez hit a grounder into the hole between short and third, shortstop Joe Anthonsen made the play, but his throw to second was late, putting runners at first and second. Ronnie Bourquin sacrificed the runners over and Richard Mercado was walked intentionally to load the bases. Jonathan Van Every then hit a grounder to first, but Hunter Jobes threw out Cooper at the plate. Alex Garabedian, who didn't start the game, but came in to the ball game in the bottom of the ninth, hit a ball to the right side that second baseman Kevin Carby could only knock down and Nunez and Mercado scored to give the Saints a two run lead.
Kyle Foster closed out the game by pitching a perfect bottom of the 13th, his third save in as many days and extending his scoreless streak to 15.2. Robert Coe earned his first professional win by pitching 0.2 scoreless innings. With the win the Saints are now all alone in first place and lead the Winnipeg Goldeyes by a game.
The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (6-7, 5.22). The Pheasants are TBA. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
