Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, ND- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-1 at Newman Outdoor Field on Tuesday night.
Ryan Hinson tossed seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits to outduel fellow left-hander Jake Laber. Hinson struck out seven and walked just one.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Wingnuts scored twice to take the lead for the remainder of the night. Jorge Delgado led off with a walk and advanced to second when Josh Workman reached first on a bunt single that was dropped by RedHawks' first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke. Peter Barrows laid down a sacrifice bunt along the third base line to give the Wingnuts second and third and one out. Edwin Bellorin followed with a single through the left side of the infield, on an 0-2 pitch, to give Wichita a 2-1 advantage.
Having been handed the lead, Hinson responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth. Beginning with the final two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Hinson retired the next eight batters in a row before a leadoff error charged to Juan Richardson in the bottom of the seventh. Hinson worked around the error when Todd Jennings flied into a double play to shallow right. Jonathan Wyatt grounded out to Hinson on the mound for the final out of the inning.
Marcos Tabata took over for Hinson in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Penprase reached on an error charged to Josh Horn leading off the inning. Like Hinson in the seventh, Tabata worked around the error. Brent Clevlen helped Tabata for the first out, making a sliding catch to rob Nic Jackson on a sinking line drive to center field. Tabata then struck out Kyle Nichols and Hoorelbeke back-to-back to end the inning.
Wichita broke the game open with three runs in the top of the ninth. Richardson led off with a double and took third on Delgado's groundball to second base. The RedHawks intentionally walked Josh Workman, setting up a hit-and-run, infield single to second that was knocked down by Carlo Cota. Richardson scored on the play and both Workman and Barrows moved an extra base when Bellorin grounded out to shortstop. Jose Duran, activated from the Disabled List before the game, hit a soft line drive to left-center that went over the head of Penprase to drive in the Wingnuts' fourth and fifth runs.
Josh Dew closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Nichols drove in the RedHawks' only run with a two-out, RBI single to right in the bottom of the first that scored Penprase from second base.
Laber took the loss, allowing two earned runs on just two hits. Laber walked four and struck out seven.
Josh Horn's 15-game hitting streak came to and end, while Brent Clevlen's 12-game streak was also snapped.
In addition to activating Duran, the Wingnuts released catcher Matthew Powell, second baseman Tyler Robbins, and also signed catcher Gerardo Bustamante. Bustamante recently finished his season with Yucatan in the Mexican League where he hit .207 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 54 games. Bustamante has thrown out 28% of opposing base stealers during his six-year career.
The series continues on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Derek Blacksher goes to the mound for the Wingnuts and faced right-hander Dan Blewett. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com following the completion of the 5:00 p.m. game at the 77th annual NBC World Series.
The Wingnuts return home on Tuesday, August 16th when they host the Kansas City T-Bones. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
