Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Over the last two weeks, quick starts and solid pitching have resulted in wins and the best stretch of ball the Winnipeg Goldeyes have played all year.

On Sunday, Winnipeg got neither.

In the second of a four-game series, the St. Paul Saints (29-18) took back sole possession of first in the North Division by beating the Goldeyes (28-19) 5-1 in front of 5,347 fans at Shaw Park.

The Fish managed just five hits in the game, which was delayed 1:18 by rain in downtown Winnipeg. They left eight men on base and were unable to get any sort of productivity going on offense.

"Things just didn't go our way today," said Goldeyes field manager Rick Forney. "The Saints are a good team and they were a better team than ours tonight. Their starter, especially, was better than ours."

That starter for St. Paul was Matt Long, who pitched into the eighth inning, allowing just one earned run on five hits. On the other side, Goldeyes starter Isaac Hess struggled in his six innings of work, especially towards the beginning of the game. In the second inning, Hess allowed three runs on two hits and hit a batter, which put the Saints ahead for good on Sunday.

"[Hess] was average," said Forney. "He struggled with his consistency and command. He's a five or six inning guy now, but just needs to have command of his fastball. If he gets that, he could be a seven or eight inning type guy."

While the Winnipeg bats were relatively lifeless, shortstop Wes Long continued his string of hot games. He recorded a hit, which brings his hitting streak to eight games. That hit also drove in the lone Goldeyes run, which accounted for Long's team-leading 37th RBI on the year.

For the Goldeyes, it was their first loss in Sunday games at home this season. They were 4-0 coming into this Sunday.

Winnipeg and St. Paul will meet again Monday night for the third game in this series. They have split the first two. Game time is at 7 p.m. and great seats are still available by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, visiting www.ticketmaster.ca, or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the one inside Shaw Park.

The game can also be heard on Sports Radio 1290 with Goldeyes radio broadcaster Paul Edmonds and seen on Shaw TV.
