Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox were down by scores of 6-0 and 10-4, but behind solid batting nights from Tim Alberts and Matt Tucker, the Sox rebounded and defeated the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 14-13 on Sunday night in front of 4,382 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Sox reliever Corey Bass (3-2) got the win, allowing just one earned run in two innings of relief. Captains reliever Jameson Maj (0-2) got the loss, allowing five runs without retiring a batter in the eighth. Amarillo's Chad Povich got his first save, allowing a run in the ninth, but striking out the last batter to end the game.
The game did not start well for the Sox as the Captains scored six runs off five hits in the first inning for a 6-0 Captains lead. The Sox began to chip away at the lead in the third inning as Tucker singled, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a flyout and scored on an error for a 6-1 deficit.
The Captains and Sox exchanged runs in the fourth as Bryan Sabatella hit an RBI single, and Kevin Butler hit a homerun for a 7-2 score.
Amarillo cut the deficit from four to two as Cyle Hankerd hit a two RBI-double to score Fehlandt Lentini and Tucker in the fifth inning. Shreveport-Bossier immediately responded with two runs in the sixth on RBI doubles by Robert Perry and Andres Rodriguez for a 10-4 Captains lead.
The Sox broke through in seventh inning as Tucker was hit by a pitch to lead off, followed by a Hankerd walk and an error during a Cruz at-bat to load the bases. Van Pope followed with an RBI single to keep the bases loaded, while Alberts singled in two more runs. With one out and the bases reloaded, Jason White delivered a two-RBI single to score Pope and Alberts and cut the lead to one at 10-9.
Shreveport-Bossier added two runs to their lead in the eighth as both runs scored on an error for a 12-9 lead. Amarillo came all the way back in the eighth. Tucker led off with a single and went to second on a Hankerd walk. Cruz tripled down the right field line to score both runners. Pope followed with an RBI single to score Cruz and tie the game. Alberts stepped in and hit a ball to the right-center field gap to score Pope from first which gave the Sox the lead. Alberts would later score on an error for a two-run lead.
Povich walked the first two batters in the ninth, allowed a Palmer Karr RBI single, but struck out Uriak Marquez to end the game with the Sox victorious 14-13.
With the win, the Sox improve to 24-24 while the Captains fall to 26-22.
