Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats dominated from the outset behind excellent pitching and a strong offensive output en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Sioux Falls Pheasants Sunday afternoon at U. S. Steel Yard.
The RailCats (29-20) were fueled by an outstanding performance by starting pitcher Carlos Rivas. The 6'3" southpaw held the Pheasants in check all night long as Rivas allowed no runs on just four hits while striking out three over his 6.2 innings of work. The Venezuelan hurler improved to 2-0 on the year and dropped his ERA to 1.25. Will Krout pitched a hitless 1.1 innings and South Central grad Travis Minix allowed just one hit in the ninth to preserve the shutout.
Mike Rohde led the charge for the RailCats offense going 3-3 on the night with a double and three RBI. The 'Cats collected ten hits off the Sioux Falls hurlers with seven of the nine starters contributing at least one base knock. Cristian Guerrero continued his hot-hitting of late with a pair of doubles.
The RailCats jumped in front with a pair of runs in the second. Guerrero led off the frame with a double and was joined on the bases by Toddric Johnson after the fleet-footed outfielder drew a walk. Rohde smacked a double into the right field corner to send home both runners giving the RailCats a 2-0 advantage.
Second baseman Brad Boyer's sacrifice fly in the third gave the 'Cats a commanding 3-0 lead with the way Rivas pitched Sunday afternoon. The lead became four when Rohde's RBI single drove in Johnson from second in the sixth.
Sioux Falls had a couple runners on in both the fourth and seventh but the RailCats kept the visitors off the scoreboard thanks to clutch pitching and solid defense. With runners on first and second and nobody out, the 'Cats turned what looked to be an RBI-single into an out, catching Joe Anthonsen in a pickle between third and home for the first out. Haines made a nice play on soft liner for the second out and fielded a grounder to keep the Pheasants scoreless.
In the seventh, Krout continued his impressive scoreless streak coming in with two runners on base and needed just one pitch to retire the side. Krout hasn't allowed an earned run since May 25 and has surrendered just three total run on the season in 32.2 innings of work, good for a paltry 0.83 ERA.
The same two teams will meet again at U. S. Steel Yard on Independence Day for a special 5:10 p.m. first pitch. RHP Scott Shaw (5-3, 5.23) gets the ball for Greg Tagert and the RailCats while Sioux Falls counters with RHP Brandon Rapoza (2-6, 4.59).
