Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

AMARILLO, Tx.---With ominous storm clouds and rain approaching National Bank Sox Stadium, the Amarillo Sox erupted for five runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Captains 14-13 Sunday night in Amarillo.

The Captains were unable to pull out comeback heroics for the third straight night against the Sox, as they gave up two separate six run leads and then plated just one run in the ninth against Amarillo reliever Chad Povich (Sv, 1).

Shreveport-Bossier scored five runs in the top of the first before Sox starter Colin Allen could record an out, taking a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the first. Bryan Sabatella and Andres Rodiguez both had RBI singles followed by Palmer Karr Jr.'s two-run double. A Brian Peterson ground out and a Joe Urtuzuastegui fielder's choice would make it 6-0.

Amarillo cut into a 7-1 deficit with Kevin Butler's first home run of the year of Richard Salazar in the bottom of the fourth. The sox would then make it 7-4 when Cyle Hankerd's fifth-inning double scored Fehlandt Lentini and Matthew Tucker. But Shreveport-Bossier would tack on two in the sixth on RBI doubles by Robert Perry and Andres Rodriguez and one in the seventh when Mike Provencher scored Peterson with a base hit.

However, the Captains bullpen could not hold the lead as Lee Henry gave up five runs (four earned) in the eighth against his former team and Jameson Maj (L, 0-2), surrendered five more on four hits in the eighth. With two on and no one out in the seventh Lee Cruz hit a ground ball to second that Captains infielder Provencher couldn't handle, putting the bases loaded with no one out and erasing a possible double play situation. Van Pope scored Matthew Tucker with a base hit and Tim Alberts scored Hankerd and Cruz with a double. Jason White's two-run single later in the frame would cut the Captains lead to 12-9.

In the eighth, the first five batters would reach and score for Amarillo, with Cruz hitting a two-run triple. Alberts knocked in the go-ahead run on a double and Adam de la Garza's only hit of the game scored Alberts to make it 14-12.

Shreveport-Bossier got one run in the top of the ninth on Palmer Karr Jr.'s RBI single, his third RBI of the game. But Povich struck out Uriak Marquez with the tying run at first to end the game.

The Captains drop to 26-22 on the year, falling to 7.5 behind the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the American Association South Division. The Sox snap a three-game losing streak to get back to .500 at 24-24. Provencher went 4-for-6 with three runs and an RBI in the loss, hitting his third triple of the year. Rodriguez went 4-for-6 as well, with two runs and two RBIs. Karr Jr. was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Robert Perry was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Tucker was 3-for-4 with four runs scored for the Sox. Cruz went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Alberts had three hits in five at bats, two runs and three RBIs. He is 6-for-12 in his last three games against the Captains. Seven players on both teams had at least one run and one RBI.

The Captains and Sox play again on Monday, July 4 at National Bank Sox Stadium as Osvaldo Rodriguez (3-1, 5.19) takes on Travis Lawler (3-2, 4.84). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
