First Period Hole Too Deep for Admirals

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Norfolk Admirals (32-20-1-7) gave up two goals in the first period and lost to the Binghamton Senators (34-20-1-4), 3-1, on Friday night at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Andrew Hammond (18-14-3) looked sensational in a 30-save performance for the Senators in which he saw 31 shots. Brad Thiessen (3-3-2) made 31 saves and allowed two goals before leaving the net that Pageau filled to seal the win.
The scoring started with a rebound goal that Binghamton's David Dziurzynski lifted over Norfolk goaltender Brad Thiessen's right shoulder at 6:19 into the first period. Thiessen made the initial save but blocked it across to the wide side where Dziurzynski quickly returned it on net.
Later on in the first, right after Thiessen dove backward to sweep a puck off the goal line, Binghamton's Stephane Da Costa elevated a backhand low in the slot to the same spot Dziurzynski scored eight minutes earlier to make the score 2-0. Da Costa's fifteenth goal of the season came with 14:20 elapsed in the opening period.
The two-goal lead held through the remainder of the first but just 14 seconds into the middle frame. Norfolk winger Devante Smith-Pelly pulled the trigger on a bullet after stepping into Senator territory. The shot caught the bottom of the crossbar and increased Smith-Pelly's team-leading goal count to 22 on the year.
Binghamton kept the Admirals off the board for the rest of the contest despite giving up seven power plays to the Admirals, including four in the third period. The Senators added an empty net goal thanks to Jean-Gabriel Pageau and defeated Norfolk, 3-1.
Binghamton moves ahead of Norfolk in the East Division with the win and now sits in second in the division behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton who beat Hamilton Friday night.
Norfolk went a hollow 0-for-7 on the power play and Hershey went 0-for-3.
The Admirals lose their 20th of the season and are 32-20-1-7. Binghamton improves to 34-20-1-4. Norfolk drops from third to seventh with the loss while the Senators jump to fifth from the seventh spot.
Norfolk's next stop on the three-game divisional road trip is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in another important game for the Admirals. That game is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m .
