St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Josh Lunden's first goal of the season stood as the game-winner and Tyler Beskorowany made 29 saves to post his first home win, as the St. John's IceCaps downed the Portland Pirates 3-2 Saturday at Mile One.

Andrew Gordon and Carl Klingberg also scored for the IceCaps, who took two-of-three from Portland with the win. Trailing 2-1 heading into the third, St. John's scored twice in the final frame to finish the home stand at 6-1.

Gordon put the IceCaps ahead 1-0 at the 11:36 mark of the opening frame, when he notched his team-leading 21st of the season. Taking the drop pass from Jason Jaffray, Jerome Samson then wheeled his way behind the Portland goal before sending it out to Gordon in the slot, who made no mistake in snapping it past Mark Visentin.

With Portland on the power play in the second period, Brandon Yip potted the equalizer at 7:37. Randy Jones dished the puck to Yip on the doorstep, who made a quick move before wristing it top corner to make it 1-1.

Just under a minute later, the Pirates pulled ahead on a goal from Jordan Szwarz. Getting a piece of Mathieu Brodeur's shot from the point, Szwarz redirected it past Beskorowany to put the Pirates ahead 2-1.

The IceCaps evened the score at two goals apiece, however, 4:58 into the final frame. After Visentin made the initial save on Kyle MacKinnon, Klingberg jumped on the rebound and blasted it high and over the blocker.

Then, at 13:02, Lunden scored his first of the season to put St. John's up 3-2. Breaking into the Pirates' zone on the rush, Blair Riley dished the puck to a lurking Lunden, who then waltzed into the slot and backhanded the go-ahead goal upstairs on Visentin. That stood as the game-winner, as the IceCaps finished strong to earn the victory and take two-of-three from Portland in the series.

The IceCaps kick off a six-game road trip next Friday night (8:30 p.m. NT) in Hartford, when they take on the Wolf Pack at the XL Center. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show gets underway at 8:00.
