Portland Pirates News Release
St. John's, NL- The Portland Pirates were unable to fend off the IceCaps on Saturday night, falling 3-2 in St. John's. Brandon Yip and Jordan Szwarz provided the offense for the Pirates, who fall to 2-8 on the year against the IceCaps.
Both teams traded opportunities in the opening period, but the IceCaps got on the board first. Andrew Gordon opened the scoring with 8:24 left in the first, his team leading 21st goal, to give the IceCaps a 1-0 lead. St. John's outshot the Pirates 16-10 in the first, with Mark Visentin making 15 saves.
The Pirates stormed back in the second. After St. John's Carl Klinberg was called for goaltender interference, Brandon Yip tied the game for the Pirates with his 9th goal of the year on the power play. Lucas Lessio and Randy Jones assisted Yip's goal. Just 56 seconds later, the Pirates would take the lead. Pirates captain Jordan Szwarz scored his 7th goal of the season to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead, with Mathieu Brodeur picking up the lone assist. The Pirates put 14 shots on net in the second to the IceCaps' 9, and led 2-1 after 2 periods of play.
The IceCaps came back in the third. Carl Klingberg tied the game 4:58 into the third period with his 16th goal of the year for St. John's. After chances for both sides, St. John's took the lead with Josh Lunden's first goal of the year with just 6:58 left in regulation. Despite a power play with an empty net, giving the Pirates a 6 on 4 advantage, Portland was unable to tie the game and could not get the equalizer.
