Swift Current, Sask. - Josh Filmon's first career WHL hat trick led the Swift Current Broncos (12-15-3-1) to a 4-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes (12-12-2-0) Monday night.

The Broncos had a pair of power play chances in the early going, but Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson made some big saves, including one on a centering feed from the goal line on Josh Filmon, to keep the game scoreless.

Later in the period it was Isaac Poulter's turn to come up with some shorthanded saves, making a pair of glove stops with no rebounds on shots from the left circle to keep the game scoreless late into the first period.

Swift Current opened the scoring in the game with just over two minutes remaining in the period. Raphael Pelletier kicked the puck up the boards to Filmon, who turned and looked at the net from the slot. Seeing traffic in front, Filmon fired a low shot that beat a screened Thomson on the glove side to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead after one.

A wild start to the second period saw the Hurricanes tie the game just 35 seconds into the period when Logan Barlage deflected in a point shot. The Broncos then responded 27 seconds later.

Brady Birnie took a feed from Cole Nagy behind the Hurricanes net and fired a sharp-angle shot on Thomson who turned it aside. Birnie then sent the rebound back to the front of the net and it deflected off a Lethbridge skate and past Thomson to restore the Broncos lead.

Lethbridge once again pulled even, this time by stealing the puck on the forecheck and throwing it to the slot for Trevor Thurston who beat Poulter over the glove, tying the game at two just 2:54 into the second period.

After killing off a penalty late in the second period, the Broncos were given a power play and took just six seconds to capitalize. After the faceoff win, Owen Pickering sent the puck to Ward in the left circle, and Ward tried a low, hard pass to the front of the net.

It deflected off a defender's skate and slid towards the right circle where Filmon fired a quick snap shot over the glove of Thomson to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

The Broncos penalty kill came up big in the third, thwarting the Hurricanes on two opportunities near the halfway mark of the period to stay ahead 3-2.

With Thomson on the bench for the extra attacker, Filmon completed his hat trick by hitting the empty net from the neutral zone to seal the 4-2 Broncos win.

The two teams get set to play again tomorrow night as the Broncos travel to Lethbridge to complete the home-and-home set.

Announced attendance was 1,528.
