Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - For the third time this season, Chad Nychuk was the overtime hero as the Brandon Wheat Kings knocked off the Winnipeg ICE 5-4 on Monday night.
Nychuk (2G-1A), Vinny Iorio (1G-1A), Nate Danielson (1G-1A) and Zakhar Polshakov (2A) each recorded multi-point nights as the Wheat Kings pick up five of a possible six points in this three-game mid season series with their provincial rivals.
"We stuck with it tonight for sure," said Iorio on the Bounce 96.1 post-game show. "We had some turkey legs tonight, but we got better in the third, limited their chances and Krugs (Ethan Kruger) played amazing for us."
Kruger finished the night with 37 saves, 14 of which came in the first period.
Brandon trailed 2-0 and 3-1 in the game, and clawed back with three third period goals to force extra time.
"We found a way to win and that is all that matters," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "Our goaltender made some key saves tonight to keep us in the game. We stuck with it, kept clawing back into the game. At the end of the day we had too many passengers and need to be better and execute our game plan."
The win improves Brandon's record 16-13-1-1 on the season and boosts the club's December record to 6-2-1-0.
For Iorio, the sting from opening weekend provided some extra motivation for these last three outings.
"Winnipeg is a good team, Opening weekend added some fuel to the fire for us for sure... and we've done it without Ridly. We've done a good job of adapting while he's away and are starting to play some real good hockey, we just need to be more consistent here."
Brandon is set to welcome Edmonton on Thursday followed by Red Deer on Saturday.
In light of tomorrow's updated Province of Manitoba facility occupancy limits, we are exploring all options with our partners at the Keystone Centre and the Western Hockey League to determine the handling of home games scheduled between Tuesday, December 28 and Tuesday, January 11, 2022.
We appreciate your patience during this constantly evolving situation. Season ticket holders, suite holders and those holding single game tickets to upcoming games are encouraged to watch your email inbox, wheatkings.com, and the Wheat Kings social media accounts for updates about ticketing and event attendance.
