Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Joey Keane scored his first USHL goal, but the visiting Cedar Rapids RoughRiders sent the Dubuque Fighting Saints fans home unhappy with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Keane's goal, which cut the RoughRiders' lead in half, came at the 4:38 mark of the third period, started some momentum rolling in the Fighting Saints' favor. That, and it brought packaged underwear flying from the stands, to be donated to local shelters across the Tri-State area. A series of drop passes by Gordie Green and Evan Smith set up Keane for the goal.
Just three minutes later, after a chance missed at one end, Sam Sternschein found teammate Justin Cole racing down the wing an odd-man rush, leading to the final dagger, a goal that put Cedar Rapids up 3-1, establishing the two-goal lead.
A late power play, and with Hunter Miska at the bench for the extra attacker starting with five minutes left in regulation time, did not influence the result, as Ben Blacker made 31 saves en route to his 33rd win of the season.
Cedar Rapids started the scoring, when Cal Burke followed his own shot to the net halfway through the first period. They scored a similar goal by crashing the crease, when defenseman Jack Ahcan buried a loose puck in the goalmouth on the power play, late in the second period. At the time, that goal put the Riders ahead 2-0.
From the second period on, the Fighting Saints controlled the tempo, outshooting the RoughRiders 24-14, and 32-21 for the game overall. Miska made 18 saves in defeat, and he will have to wait to tie Jacob Nehama's single-season wins record until next Friday.
The Fighting Saints hit a couple of goal posts behind Blacker, and crowded the crease themselves, but were unable to score, other than Keane's goal. The Saints went 0-for-4 on the power play, and Cedar Rapids capitalized on one of six power play chances on Saturday night.
The second of three consecutive games against in-state rival Cedar Rapids continues on Friday, April 1 for College Night at Our House. Attack Section tickets with $5 in Saints Bucks are available to college students with valid IDs for just $10!
