Madison Capitols News Release
Bloomington, IL - The Madison Capitols (24-23-5-3) hit the road for just the third time since February on Saturday as they venture to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum for a matchup with the playoff-bound Bloomington Thunder (34-18-3-1) at 7:00 p.m.
The two teams have not met since Jan. 2, a game in which Bloomington prevailed 2-0 behind a 29-save shutout from Logan Halladay. The Thunder has had the upper hand on the Capitols since the two teams entered the league together in 2014. Bloomington has won five of the first six matchups between the squads, and the Capitols have not defeated Bloomington in over a calendar year.
Bloomington enters their home ice coming off of a playoff-clinching 5-3 victory in Dubuque over the Fighting Saints. For the third straight time in a Thunder victory, captain Jake Slaker picked up the game-winning tally, while Halladay earned the victory in the crease.
While they will not be joining the playoff festivities this season, the Capitols have strung together some of their best hockey in their young history. Madison has earned points in 13 of the last 16 games, including each of the last five.
The Capitols picked up all four points possible last weekend in a pair of thrilling victories over Green Bay and Des Moines respectively. The Capitols survived a strong Gamblers push and won a 4-3 shootout decision on March 18 to seal the Wisconsin Cheese Cup title before erasing a 5-3 deficit in the third period on Saturday to win 6-5 in overtime over the Bucs.
Marcel Godbout was the overtime hero on Saturday after Luke McElhenie provided the shootout clincher on Friday.
The Capitols have equaled their win total from all of 2014-15 and can set the franchise record for wins in a season with a triumph over Bloomington on Saturday.
After the one-game weekend in Bloomington, the Capitols return home for three straight games to close out the home slate from April 1-8 against Muskegon (twice) and Bloomington.
Next Friday, April 1, is the final WJJO Dollar Beer Night of the 2015-16 season. Doors open at 6 p.m. with beers being served at the $1 price through the end of the first intermission.
Family 4-Packs also make their last appearance next weekend on Saturday, April 2. Fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, and four bags of chips all for just $48. Packages are only available via pre-sale and will not be sold on game night at the Alliant Energy Center box office.
