Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In need of a bounce back after Friday night's shutout loss, the Dubuque Fighting Saints powered through the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 4-1 at The Stable on Saturday night. It was only the eighth time that the RoughRiders lost on their home ice, and the second time to the Fighting Saints.
The Fighting Saints made due with early opportunities in the first and second periods. Zach Solow started the scoring at the 2:05 mark of the first period. Solow powered his way to the net off of a Keegan Ford snap shot, and pounded the rebound home to begin.
Gordie Green beat that time with a goal one minute and 52 seconds into the second period. Off of a turnover, Brett Boeing slung a cross-crease dish to the charging Green to make it 2-0 Dubuque. Colin Theisen added to the scoring late in the second period with a blast to the top shelf off of a pass from Solow, who entered the zone uncontested.
Cedar Rapids' leading scorer Ross Colton prevented the RoughRiders from being shut out with a late third period goal by banking the puck off of the back of Hunter Miska, but that was the only marker that the home team could put forth.
Miska dominated in net for the Fighting Saints, and in the process, notched win number 27 on the season. He now trails Fighting Saints alum Jacob Nehama by two wins for the single-season record. The Minnesotan netminder did his best work on Saturday night on the penalty kill, stoking the PK unit to a 3-for-3 night. He made 29 saves in the win.
Up by two, and on a delayed penalty against Spenser Young, CR defenseman David Nemecek took an interference minor to even up manpower. A minute and a half later, Nathan Sucese found the empty net vacated by Ben Blacker, and scored his 20th goal of the season to cement the 4-1 win.
Dallas Gerads set the tone for the "Coneheads" line, picking up two assists. Solow picked up a goal and an assist, and Theisen notched a goal to tally five points for the line.
Along with the Green Bay Gamblers sweep of the Omaha Lancers, the Saints and Gamblers are tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with 68 standings points.
The Fighting Saints play a rare Thursday game at the Mystique Community Ice Center when the Bloomington Thunder come to town on St. Patrick's Day for a 7:05 start. Tickets are available for Irish Night by calling the box office at 563.583.6880, or by going online to DubuqueFightingSaints.com today.
