Fargo wins in overtime
March 12, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
In again a low-scoring affair the Des Moines Buccaneers and Fargo Force skated to overtime tied at one but Fargo came away with the game winner late in overtime in front of their home fans.
Neither side was able to get a goal in the first twenty minutes as the two teams picked up where they left off playing solid defensive hockey. Des Moines took the only penalty of the first period and Fargo peppered goaltender Jan Ruzicka with four shots in the final minute of the first period but Ruzicka stopped all of them to finish the period with 13 saves. Ryan Wischow, who left the night before after the first period with an injury, made 11 saves in the first frame on Saturday.
Des Moines got the first goal of the game on their first MidAmerican Energy power play chance of the game when Patrick Grasso took the goal from between the left circle and the goal line and he switched it to the right side then Wyatt Bongiovanni found Zach Jordan between the circles and Jordan buried the goal at the 10:49 mark. Oliver Celec then drew a 5 minute major and a boarding call and game disqualification from Griffin Foulk 13:47 into the second period. The Buccaneers would never see any time on the power play from the penalty however as 2 minute minors for unsportmanlike conduct and slashing and then a 5 minute major for charging were assessed on Des Moines, and the two teams ended the period tied at 1 with the Bucs still having 1:57 left of the major to kill off.
The third period saw the least chances for both teams as Fargo outshot Des Moines 8 to 5 for the period. The Buccaneers had the only power play chances of the period but were unable to convert and each team would put a point in the bank as they finished the period deadlocked at 1 and headed to overtime.
The overtime started out at 4 on 4, as it was scheduled to for the first 3 minutes and a whistle, but would remain 4 on 4 the entire time a long stretch without a whistle kept play alive nearing one minute remaining in the overtime period. Jake McLaughlin fed Hugo Reinhardt who scored from the left circle and came away with the overtime winner for Fargo at the 5:50 mark of overtime. Jan Ruzicka finished with 40 saves on the night, Ryan Wischow with 25 in the win.
Up next for the Buccaneers is a home contest hosting the Tri-City Storm on Friday, Mary 18th.
