MUSKEGON, MI - Rem Pitlick recorded his first career United States Hockey League hat trick, and Matej Paulovic set the franchise scoring record with one assist, as the Muskgon Lumberjacks (22-22-6) knocked off the Sioux City Musketeers (20-30-1) 5-3.
For the second consecutive night, the Musketeers opened the scoring five minutes into the first period. On the first power play of the game, Mitch Fossier redirected a Tony Stillwell shot into the back of the net to give the Musketeers an early 1-0 lead. Muskegon would level the game with less than ten seconds to go in the first period with a power play goal of their own. Charlie Gerard rifled home his 15th of the season, with Tyler Irvine and Logan Drevitch notching the assists.
Seven minutes into the second period, the Lumberjacks found themselves on another power play, but it was Sioux City scoring their second goal of the game. Evan Wisocky bashed home a shorthanded goal, to give the Musketeers a 2-1 lead. However, on that same power play opportunity, Rem Pitlick fired home his 36th of the season to tie the game at two. Derek Daschke and Grant Gabriele registered the assists on the goal. Three minutes later, Pitlick scored his second goal of the game after Jake Coleman moved the puck to Pitlick on a breakaway. The Lumberjacks took the 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
Four minutes into the third period, Matej Paulovic weaved through the Musketeers defense, and moved the puck to Dante Palecco who gave the Lumberjacks a 4-2 lead. With the assist, Paulovic passed Matheson Iacopelli for the franchise scoring record with 102 points. Sioux City's Logan Gestro slapped home his first goal of the season, to cut the Lumberjacks lead to one. However, with 8 seconds to go in the game, Pitlick fired home his third goal of the game to complete his first career hat trick, and lift the Lumberjacks to a 5-3 win.
It was the fourth straight home win for Muskegon, and seventh home win in their last nine games. Pitlick extended his home goal scoring streak to 15 games, and home point streak to 21 games. He now has 38 goals and 69 points on the season. Paulovic extended his home point streak to ten games with his assist tonight. Devin Cooley picked up his second straight win stopping 29 shots tonight.
The Lumberjacks will play at home three consecutive nights, starting with this Thursday's St. Patrick's Day game against the Waterloo Blackhawks. The Lumberjacks will sport special green jerseys for the occasion.
