Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (22-23-4-3) raced out of the gates with three first period goals en route to a 5-3 triumph over the Youngstown Phantoms (24-19-4-5) on Saturday night at the Alliant Energy Center, the club's fifth straight win at the Coliseum.

The Capitols rode the momentum of the win in front of 3,189 frenzied fans on Friday into a lightning-fast start in the first period on Saturday.

At the 7:57, Ryan Carlson, playing in his first USHL game on defense, freed himself up at the left point, blasting a shot that ticked past Colin DeAugustine to open the scoring.

Alex Payusov quickly added to the Carlson tally, as he sniped a perfect shot from the left wing circle over the shoulder of DeAugustine to put Madison on top 2-0 at 11:34.

The Phantoms threatened to come back, as Matt Miller launched a point offering that eluded Ryan Edquist at 13:52 to cut the Capitols' lead in half, but the one-goal lead quickly would balloon back up to two.

As the Capitols were operating a man down, Marshall Moise, a night after notching the game-winning goal, found himself all alone cutting in on goal. Jason Cotton overskated the puck at his own blue line, and Moise stole, powered to the front of the net, then neatly deked a backhander behind DeAugustine at 15:28 to push the Madison lead to 3-1 at intermission.

After the frenetic first, the two teams settled down defensively in the middle frame. Youngstown showed they would not go quietly either, as Yushiroh Hirano cleaned up a Cam Morrison rebound off of Edquist's pad, blasting a shot home at 10:45 to cut the Madison lead to 3-2. DeAugustine also stabilized things at the defensive end for the Capitols, nabbing all 10 Capitols' bids on goal in the second frame.

The Capitols picked up their first two power plays of the game in the second, including an advantage that carried into the third. Madison used that advantage to gain insurance.

Just 36 seconds into the third, Cole Hults punched a one-time point shot at the net, where Luke McElhenie redirected the eventual game-winner past DeAugustine to put the Caps on top 4-2.

Just 1:59 later, the Capitols fired one last gut punch. Madison native Mick Messner raced to a loose puck in the right corner, carried behind the net, then fed the front, where Charlie Parker jammed the loose puck in behind DeAugustine to put the Capitols ahead 5-2.

Hirano rounded out the scoring with his 20th of the season with less than a minute to play, but it was too little, too late for Youngstown.

Edquist picked up his second straight victory, making 23 stops.

The Capitols take Sunday off before embarking on a three-game week, including a stop at the PREMIER Center to take on the Sioux Falls Stampede on Tuesday night for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop. They then return home on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, for contests against Green Bay and Des Moines respectively.

Friday marks another WJJO $1 Beer Night from doors' opening at 6 p.m. through the end of the first intermission. It is also the finale of the Wisconsin Cheese Cup. A Capitols' win would result in a second straight clinching of the Cheese Cup for Madison.

Saturday will be a Craft Beer Night at the Coliseum, with ten different craft beers from breweries such as Sam Adams, Leinenkugel's, and more. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for the Caps' second tangle with the Buccaneers.
