Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Chicago winger Haralds Egle was the only of 10 shooters to score in a five-round shootout Saturday night, blasting a slap shot into the back of the net to secure a 2-1 shootout victory for the Steel (21-21-4-3, 49 points) over Team USA (20-24-4-2, 46 points) Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Steel netminder Daniel Vladar stopped 36 of 37 shots through regulation and overtime, then denied all five Team USA shootout attempts, to register his first USHL shootout victory.
Neither team was able to open up the scoring in a physical first period. The frame was filled with penalties, including an unsuccessful 1:48 5-on-3 advantage for Team USA. Chicago was outshot 7-5 in the first period.
Team USA gained their first lead of the weekend series with a power play goal exactly one minute into the second period. USA captain Phil Kemp bounced a shot from the left point through traffic and over the left shoulder of Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar. It was the first power play goal surrendered by the Steel since Feb. 6, ending a streak of six perfect penalty kill games for Chicago.
Later in the second period, Chicago evened things up when Mitch Lewandowski dished a pass to the high slot for Max Zimmer. Zimmer one-timed a blast past USA netminder Dylan St. Cyr at 6:25. It was the University of Wisconsin commit's eighth goal and 22nd point of the season.
Neither team could break the 1-1 tie in the third period and the game progressed to overtime. Team USA had the better of the chances in overtime, outshooting Chicago 6-1, but Vladar remained strong in net.
In round five of the shootout, Egle provided the game-winner and the Steel celebrated their first weekend sweep at home this season.
The Steel return to action with a pair of home games next weekend at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Chicago faces off against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. The following night, the defending Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede come to town for Irish Celebration Night at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Steel Box Office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, by phone at 855-51-STEEL and online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
