Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Waterloo, IA-A night after one of their worst performances of the year, the Stampede turned in one of their best performances and earned two big standings points as they exploded for six goals in a 6-3 thumping of the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena Saturday night. Parker Tuomie and Eric MacAdams both tallied two goals each while Stefanos Lekkas continued his dominance between the pipes stopping 39 shots for the Herd who improved to 24-23-4 on the year and in fifth place in the West. The Stampede trail Fargo for the fourth and final playoff spot by just two points with nine games remaining in the regular season.
The Stampede wanted to make a statement early that they were ready to play and they did just that as Josh Passolt scored just 24 seconds into the game. Joe Rutkowski sent a pass up the right wing wall to Passolt who broke into the Hawks zone and cut into the high slot where he wristed a shot right past the glove side of Waterloo netminder Cale Morris. It stayed that way until the 13:36 mark when Jack Suter sent a perfect pass from the Stampede blueline to the Black Hawks blue line where Parker Tuomie snuck behind the defense and broke in on a breakaway and backhanded a shot under the left arm of Morris to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 edge for his 24th of the season. Just over a minute later the Herd made it 3-0 when Eric MacAdams slapped a shot from just over the blueline into the upper left hand corner of the net for his 7th of the year. Waterloo pulled Morris at that point and put in Garrett Metcalf. The Hawks would respond just over a minute later with a goal of their own when Sam McCormick recorded his 26th of the year off a rebound. The Herd would take a 3-1 lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 16-11 in the first.
The Stampede picked up right where they left off to start the second, scoring just 3:25 into the period when MacAdams tallied his second of the night. MacAdams took the puck down the right wing boards and skated into the right circle before wristing a shot that went right through the legs of Metcalf for his 8th of the season and extended the Herd's lead to 4-1. Waterloo picked up their play after that and if it wasn't for the outstanding play of goaltender Stefeanos Lekkas, the outcome may have been different on this night. Lekkas stopped shot after shot from Waterloo, including some highlight reel saves and even a penalty shot midway through the period. The Hawks would get one late in the period to make it a 4-2 game. Sioux Falls held the lead, despite being outshot 13-4 in the period.
Lekkas continued to play at the top of his game to start the third, frustrating the Black Hawks forwards and preserving their two-goal advantage. A scary moment occurred midway through the period when Colin Saccoman took out Eric MacAdams near the Hawks blueline, going knee-to-knee with him. That resulted in a five-minute major for kneeing and 10-minute game misconduct. The Herd would waste little time cashing in on the power play opportunity when Tuomie took a pass inside the right circle from Passolt and backhanded the puck past the left pad of Metcalf to give the Herd a 5-2 edge. Once again the Hawks wouldn't go without a fight and pulled within two goals with just under two minutes left, but the Herd put the game away for good when Daniel Warpecha tallied an empty net goal to seal the victory.
The Black Hawks outshot the Herd 13-5 in the third and 42-20 in the game, but it wouldn't matter on this night as the Herd earned the win. Sioux Falls finished 1-for-2 on the power play while the Hawks were 0-for-4.
Sioux Falls returns for a quick home game this Tuesday when they host Madison at 7:05 PM. It is also The Furniture Mart Family 4-Pack night. For $49, you can receive 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas and 1 large popcorn. These packages are available ONLY through the Stampede office in person or by calling 336-6060.
